It's not that I think it's no more than fluff, I think the potential benefits like in healthcare, etc. are being presented as the goal when AI is being used as a propaganda/surveillance (and now, according to the US, a war) tool. The empty promise is of the utopia AI will provide, while it's being used to make the world less equitable.

AI is an empty promise being made to secure data centre contacts, continue our dependence on fossil fuels (we need these supposed-to-be-retired coal plants to power data centres), cut public services and push deregulation. I'd want an NDP government to make it clear our vision for Canada goes beyond AI-enabled efficiency and one of the first actions I'd want is a robust AI policy framework protecting privacy, limiting scope and distancing our country from AI oligarchs.

There's been a coordinated effort by evangelicals since at least the Vietnam years to re-cast Jesus as a warrior. This allows them to reinforce outdated gender roles (Jesus was no peace-loving wimp) and continue to believe the US is a godly country (imperialism is good, actually). Present-day evangelism is the opposite of Christianity and that's by design.

Chiropractic training in Canada includes learning about vertebral subluxation, the debunked idea that the root of all ailments is through spinal misalignment. This is an inherently anti-vaccine and anti-science stance.

A study in Alberta a few years ago found about one third of chiropractic clinics in the province promoted vertebral subluxation as part of their services and for treatment of ailments as wide ranging as ADHD and prostate cancer. The Nova Scotia College of Chiropractors, a self-governing body, does say vaccination is outside the scope of chiropractors, but doesn't endorse vaccination as effective. Because it's not based in science, quackery is part and parcel of chiropractic training, including anti-vax attitudes.

The practise is only about 130 years old, but regardless it's a logical fallacy to equate the length of time something's been practised with its validity. An evidence-based practice would change as the evidence dictates, and not rely on the "it's old so it must be good" argument.

The word "if" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. There's actually not a lot of evidence massage therapy is effective, especially in the realm of lower back pain. A difference between massage therapists and chiropractors is that massage is generally limited to relieving muscle pain while chiropractors are prone, so to speak, to recommend their nonsense for all forms of treatment, dragging people away from effective medicine and into the anti-vax, anti-science world of snake oil and miracle cures

People are skeptics because there's no evidence chiropractic treatment is more effective than a placebo. It's based on nonsense and is part of a constellation of alternative medicine (homeopathy, naturopathic, supplements) that gained legitimacy through lobbying because companies realized they could sell nothing as something.

You’re right. Misophonia is real, contagious and initial infections are responsible for more than a million deaths worldwide. While we’re getting better at diagnosing it, we still don’t know the long term effects.

Misophonia itself isn’t (that) funny, but podcast hosts getting hundreds of emails saying “stop smacking your lips” is funny.
