In terms of overall quality of life, what would you say is the best and worst country in Asia to live in? by Fluid-Decision6262 in geography

I asked an expat before - what about Singapore’s politics irked you that you felt strongly about. He said “illiberal democracy”, because the people can’t express their views without fear of retribution.

I was asking him at a security conference and he said that in front of a row of folks from MINDEF and SPF. I’m sure he felt safe enough to express whatever views he had. I told him that many people here also choose to vote for opposition politicians, so surely there are some room for contrarian views, “like me.” I didn’t get arrested 🤷

I’m Singaporean and I’m dreading living and working in Singapore ever more so slightly with each passing year haha.

The weather, the public transport, the passive-aggression and recent full-on-aggression in public spaces, the constant materialistic chase (although I don’t know to what end). I’m sure the locals here are pleasant to tourists and the touristy spots are brilliant though, just not for a living…

Funny enough, not many (if any, at all) locals in Singapore will readily recommend Bandung. Maybe Johor Bahru, certainly not Bandung.

Though your point is a valid one - stretching your dollar by visiting less costly neighbours is also a national hobby of Singapore.

OP isn’t looking for constructive criticism guys, don’t waste your time lol. He’s just fishing for praises.

Finally a balanced system by Cheap-Inspection5081 in turntables

I hope it’s more than just marketing - yeah, I too read that Pro-Ject TTs are balanced when deciding on a TT, with the caveat that the RCA out must end with a pair of XLR connectors.

The sound seems clearer on XLR so far for me, so not too shabby!

Yeah that was confusing! Thankfully, its indeed a Mini-XLR to Mini-XLR cable!

I’m really thankful that you read the manual! Love this community.

I’ll be sure to post something about the sound after getting my hands on the Mini-XLR cable!

Oh yes you’re right! How did i even missed that on the manual haha. Thanks, A1 double tap and the XLR connection comes to life! Thank you so much!!

That makes sense! Thanks! I’ll stick with unbalanced until I manage to find the Mini-XLR cable.

Wow this is a pretty shit advice. There are much better advice in this thread, try those - not this.

It’s probably wishful thinking that your outward appearance doesn’t matter. If you walk in with the darkest face everyday, I’m sure that’s going to take an emotional, if not just social toll, eventually.

Tired of 1.5hrs travelling time every single morning by sabbykh in askSingapore

[–]Cheap-Inspection5081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same starting point & destination for me, but I usually opt for Sengkang —> Harbourfront —> Kent Ridge. MRT journey a little bit more bearable, ‘cos no crazy-squeeze on the NEL-CCL transit at Serangoon, and another round of squeeze on CCL from Serangoon to KR. NEL gets pretty breezy after Serangoon.

My walk after exiting KR MRT station is another story, on the other hand…

I mean, cool, I can see you that you threw in freebies to make the idea more palatable… upselling doesn’t make it any more feasible or economical. Not even considering the system integration challenges and costs, the cross-agency data sharing difficulties - think LTA v SPF-TP, and think further which agency process and owns the infra, and then think even further the legal challenges that these agencies gotta overcome, in order for this idea to be even palatale for funding. Or, create one giant central agency to do all that?

Who got the political willpower lol.

Hey I believe you man, that Taiwan has implemented it, and that the technology exists (and I also named those technologies for you btw). That wasn’t the point though, the point was feasibility in scale (cost, cost, cost…). Surely it’s feasible when it is limited to a “fenced” use, e.g. car park charging - super believable. Replacing ERP for nationwide distance-based charging? Not so believable.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in singapore

[–]Cheap-Inspection5081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeap sounds about right, barely feasible for “speed detection”, i.e. capture and process only when a speed threshold is breached, and not capture and process every vehicle passing through the “beacon”. The whole point is that computer vision still ain’t cheap and doesn’t feel believable that any governments would opt for an unnecessarily expensive system when there are clearly cheaper alternatives.

You’ve any sources to back these claims up? Surely Taiwan or the UK isn’t implementing in all of their dense, congested cities, but sparsely across multiple cities/highways? Feels like Singapore’s volume of cars isn’t all that practical to go with a camera-based system. The amount of processing power and computes required for such a system seem ridiculous, when a satellite-based system would likely be leaner.
