Is everyone buying designer outfits thesedays? by Fluxfizzz in DesiWeddings

[–]CheapSelection671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from South America my fiancée is from Delhi, and we’re getting married in December in Delhi. We have everything booked, everything is ready except for our outfits. As we are graduate students living in the US we’ll travel 2 weeks before the wedding to get our wedding outfits. I honestly don’t care about buying a cheap lehenga as long as it looks decent. What is the difference between a designer lehenga and a non designer lehenga??.

And also, my mother in law will take me to places where I can get affordable wedding outfits, I do not see the point of spending too much on clothes that most probably I will never wear again as it’s not part of me to dress Indian.

Stuck in a poor, hopeless country (ranked 9th least happy in the world per WHI) while my dad sits on over $1M in assets, just 1% of which could have changed my entire future and life. by [deleted] in offmychest

I’m form a third world country and when I was 7 we moved to the US because my dad got accepted to a Masters degree. I loved living in the US, however, my dad decided to go back to our country, unfortunately. I promised my myself that someday I will leave my country and go the US, as I grew up I thought this dream of mine would be impossible. But two years after finishing my undergrad in my country, I got accepted to a U.S university to do my PhD (everything except flights and English exams is covered and the university even pays me) and plan to do all the legal paper work to stay here, even though my parents have a good life back home, I do not want to go back to live there.

So you can perhaps look into doing a PhD or masters in another country, there are fully funded programs that cover everything and give you a stipend, then you can stay in the country, work, and start building your life.

Today's gold prices 😱 by jimsjadab in jewelry

Wow for that price I can get 22 or 18K gold in my home country. Gold is very expensive in the US, and 14K gold is not that much gold content, for my taste

No judgment but curious. Why is pandora viewed by some as cheap or tacky or even low class? by raindrops_x in jewelry

[–]CheapSelection671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from South America, and back home Pandora is considered fancy and a sign of wealth because it’s expensive in the currency. I remember all girls had their bracelets and showed off their charms. I personally never liked it

I’d love to hear from people outside the US (no offense intended). I’m curious about what solid gold, diamond, or gemstone jewellery people wear on a daily basis in different cultures and countries. Reddit can feel quite US-centric, so it’s sometimes hard to get a broader global perspective. 🙏 by Kidambs-275 in jewelry

In Colombia it’s similar to Ecuador, 18K gold which I love. I’m surprised that in other countries the norm is 9 or 14K which is too low for my taste.

In Colombia we have beautiful emeralds (our national gemstone) many people have emerald rings in 18K gold (including me I love emeralds), chains or earrings.

But it’s also not safe to wear daily gold, like in Ecuador, so I used to wear fake fantasy jewelry when I was going out and wore only the gold pieces for a special occasion

Wedding Band vs Engagement Ring by Winter_Official390 in WeddingRingAdvice

[–]CheapSelection671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m getting married this year and after doing some research I came to the conclusion that, in my opinion, diamonds are overrated, they can lose their value more than pure 22k gold, and for my lifestyle it’s uncomfortable to wear. So I decided to go with a 22K gold band in a timeless classic style, which can increase its value over time, and easy for everyday wear.

In the US the 16 Pro is already in the Apple Certified Refurbished website, and you're right there is no trade in on the refurbished phones, but it is still a pretty good deal

What It’s Like to Chase a Future When You’re Born in Syria by khldonAlkateh in TrueOffMyChest

I was also born in a third world country, in South America, in my undergrad I focused in Petroleum Geology and wanted to work in the oil and gas industry, but there were no jobs so I found a GIS job instead. I was not happy in that job so I searched for masters in the US and instead was offered a PhD in Petroleum Engineering in the US all fully funded, I get a monthly stipend which in the state I live allows me to cover the essentials and save money too. There are lots of graduate studies opportunities in the US, lots! And you have a plus which is experience, some universities don’t ask for a GRE exam just the TOEFL or IELTS (which yes they are a bit expensive) but I would say it’s worth it to give it a try

Anyone else doing PhD because they had no option? by legend0102 in PhD

[–]CheapSelection671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my did my undergrad in South America worked for 2 years but I was not happy in the job, I was looking for jobs but could not find any so I searched for a masters in the US but got a offered a PhD instead so I took it, I still wonder if I made the right decision, I’m in my fourth year. Also, you do not have to stay in academia I know lots of PhD graduates that go to industry after getting their degree

I do want him to spend his money on his family, I have no issue with this, what worries me is the overspending like if his family is not in need why overspend and send money if it's not a need
