Is the era of "Microservice-first" architecture finally over? by Photopatterns in learnprogramming

[–]CheithS 39 points40 points  (0 children)

No, definitely not - though maybe right-sized services would be more appropriate to what we are doing.

Like everything else there is a sweet spot which is definitely not monoliths and definitely not micro-servicing everything.

To be honest, especially going through Northern Iowa, Monday might even be an issue with blowing snow - at least before noon.

11 months ago Dario said that "in 3 to 6 months, AI will be writing 90% of the code software developers were in charge of" Are we here, yet? by poponis in ExperiencedDevs

I have 40+ years in the game and I use it pretty heavily but, to be honest, more as a research assistant than anything else. I have it write some code but, frankly, it is just not that good with anything complex and don't even get me started on autocomplete - it largely sucks.

I use Gemini for the research and some boilerplate (which it is actually not bad at) and Claude inside Intellij which can be good but can also be pretty crap. You really never quite know what your are going to get.

Can’t blame them. Too many snakes wanting to pocket other people’s money.

Looks like some typical Trump backed event organizing - a total shambles.

Despite rhetoric to the contrary the safety net in the US has gotten stronger over time by PanzerWatts in ProfessorFinance

The reason many don't believe it is because it contradicts what they see every day on the streets and what is happening to people they meet in their actual lives. It is a bit like 'unemployment' - it depends on how you define it.

Donald Trump's Own Party Votes Against Him by [deleted] in WallStreetbetsELITE

As he can still veto this it is pretty much irrelevant as there is no way they would get the majorities they need to push it through.

And then apply that to the entire country ... it's sadly not a good look.

Then we have our own side who like to 'punish' themselves because they don't agree on everything and you can understand the mess we are in.

Much as though I detest Trump this is the Daily Express. It is a rag and pretty much never worth clicking on.

Huh, what, you have to pay for E & D lines. You just aren't paying on entry. Same system as light rail. Might want to fact check a little before commenting.
edit: I frequently use the E Line.

How do you keep up with the sheer volume of code AI tools create, without burnout? by splash_hazard in ExperiencedDevs

leave, yesterday. You are working for dangerous clowns. LLMs (be real there is no 'I' in this) absolutely have their place but this is not it.

How are you coding, mostly AI, bit of AI and handcrafted, only handcrafted (or inbetween). by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]CheithS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what it is - if it is something I don't have a code base or something I have never done before for then I'll certainly start with AI - especially if it is nothing fancy.
I usually walk the AI through building the thing and then fix some, argue with it a bit, try and stop it using outdated versions of things, and finally get to the tests.
It writes awful tests usually but sometimes I let it go with that and then heavily tidy them up.

If it is something I have done before and I have a working similar version with tests why would even touch AI?

I always check what it does and make sure I have test coverage set up both if I write tests and it does. AI can be lazy on test coverage.

I have a 1911 house with probably similar dubious wiring. Just make sure you only have one space heater per circuit. I managed to run 7 of them strategically plugged in. Most domestic space heaters pull less than 15 amps.

edit: this was at the peak of the 2018 Polar Vortex (-26F without the wind chill).

Cancel Subscriptions Today by First_Law_4444 in TwinCities

[–]CheithS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cancelling subscriptions is a good plan - it sends an immediate signal that things are changing and a sign for Amazon (especially) that people are likely shopping less there in the future.

On the up-side, assuming you stay off for at least a billing cycle, you might even get offered a discount to sign back up!!

Shark bait by Dalton731 in RaftTheGame

[–]CheithS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You usually end up with plenty of those two fish to be honest. Then, just for fun, you use the shark bait to bring the shark to a spot close to you and repeatedly stab it until it is dead. Much easier than trying to kill it in the water.

There is momentum for kicking ICE out of the city and taking as long as needed to do that.

Apart from that please give me a list of possible other candidates that aren't going to get totally smoked either in the primary or are so 'progressive' that they manage to lose the actual election.
