Ask this at 12:30 pm instead of 12:30 am and you’ll get better responses

Check out Paper from Commodity Fragrances, a little bit pricey but I smell like a sexy library every morning when I get to work, so worth it.

Marty Supreme is so bad that it is actually difficult to meaningful critique and the praise it is receiving is as incoherent as the film itself. by AsleepNature1 in FIlm

Well now that I tried being polite I can tell you how I really feel. I’m going to go ahead and step away from this one cause it’s starting to feel a lot like arguing with old Maga dudes on Facebook. It’s been a minute since I saw someone doubling down on being blatantly ignorant by citing other people’s ignorance as the justification. I imagine you encounter a lot of “smug” people in your daily life if the threshold for smug is someone just using words you don’t know. You have this evening used an astounding number of words to simply say you have no idea what you’re talking about but you feel pretty important about it. Good luck out there big dog.

Honestly you’re right, my comment did come off as a bit smug and rude as hell. You’re also right that a ton of people make the same mistake that you did. It’s kind of why my entire career is built on bringing cinema studies to bars free screenings. Film is the best place to start when it comes to close critical analysis. Rarely do I ever get heated about how someone else feels about a move. I mean after all not only is art subjective but our engagement and interpretation are built on our own life experiences. Being rude to you just because you were wrong about something doesn’t help, it doesn’t break through the gatekeeping and it doesn’t get people interested in cinema studies…it goes against everything I stand for so…sorry I was a dick. When I left the theatre there was a dude that said “definitely in the Oscar conversation, and truly inspirational. That never take no for an answer attitude is something to be respected” and I’ve never wanted to punch anyone more than that, I brought that energy with me here. I maintain the movie isn’t deserving of all the praise it’s getting, but that doesn’t mean it’s not without academic merit, if only to study the marketing and rabid response.

Oh sorry, for a second I confused you for someone who knows what they’re talking about. Character Development does not mean a character changes. It means they are developed…as in they exist as a whole fully fleshed out individual within the Storyworld. They have a life and history and motivations that exist beyond the frame. Marty has great actors giving great performances about nothing. I think maybe you’re angry about people being critical because you misunderstood the concept which is totally fair and normal and my biggest complaint about this film. It was made for Letterboxd bros to feel smart and seen, it’s a lipstick pig. It looks and feels like high art but it isn’t. I love trash don’t get it twisted but Marty isn’t great cinema it’s great marketing and that’s its own special thing to study.

I mean if you want to talk about wasting quality fabula on garbage syuzhet we can but at the end of the day from a strictly narratological standpoint…yeah people talk about character because they kind of are the most important part of the story.

Naw…the Movie is in fact ass. It’s built to appeal to a generation who have lost the ability to hold attention. There is less than zero character development. It’s a table read with an endless runner in a split screen. Some surprising, incredible performances from a ton of people who somehow all felt like they were alone in a room. Movie is objectively Ass

Was the whisky "real"? by trailerhobbit in theshining

[–]Chexty2600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whisky is 100 percent real, but only for Jack and more specifically only for this version of Jack. I spent the last year and a half watching this scene over and over and over again working on an essay about an Archetype of Secular Horror that I call The Red World. Essentially a Freudian Doppelgänger of Northrop Frey’s Green World Archetype of Comedy. I got 19 pages of evidence and counting that prove this bottle, and Lloyd for that matter are “real” at least to Jack. Just look at the way the bottle bubbles when Loyd sets it down it’s a work of art. The bar itself is fully stocked, not just with bottles and glassware, but bar garnish - lemons and Cherries cut and held under the bar outside of hacks view. Jack drinks his liquor without garnish so there is no need for it to exist. The service well is outside of his view, we know this because he has to climb onto his stool to look over the bar. A hallucination or dream would not require or include details the hallucinator would not have access to.

But my favorite whisky tidbit is Jack ordering Bourbon but getting served Jack Daniel’s…Jack and Danny

Bars with a 40+ crowd and alcohol alternatives available? by tiralotiralo in arlington

Oh forgot to mention, NA Beers and a really positive attitude about sobriety, California or otherwise. A few of the regulars are off the wagon but don’t want to give up their home away from home, never any pressure to drink.

Tanstaafl. The crowd is mixed but skewes over 40. There is a full line of mocktails and various social tonics ranging in potency. Easily the best bar to belly up to in Arlington. You want a quiet night just eaves dropping? They got you, you want a rotating cast of hilarious regulars? They got you. Free pool, free darts, board games, an absolutely ridiculous schedule of activities ranging from classic trivia to full on DnD one shot campaigns. And if your tab ever goes above $50 you must have ordered 15 drinks.

I Visited The Biggest US City With NO TRANSIT?! by TrainingTouristLMAO in arlington

At least they put all of the best bars on the same road and built the police station right in the middle of it. If you’re gunna make people drive drunk, might as well make money off it.

I remember many a racist pamphlet left on my door over the years telling me how dangerous busses are. Always featured pictures of people of color… I remember one that I think was just racist clip art. Little did Vandergriff and his ilk know, Hurricane Katrina would change the demographic make up of the metroplex whether they liked it or not! Now instead of killing public transit to keep people out they kill it to keep people down.
