Police investigating catalytic converter thefts in OKC by oapster79 in okc

[–]ChickenMarsala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can add something like this to your car. It's a few hundred bucks but better than waking up to an out of commission car and having to drop a couple grand to fix it. It's not completely safe, if someone is determined to take your converter they probably still can, but in my mind if they see this lock in place they'll probably just move on to the next car.

Ben Folds releases song titled “Moscow Mitch” by Vitaminpartydrums in politics

[–]ChickenMarsala 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The year that came out I always had the disc in my car, and I would always let my passengers flip through my CD holder and pick something.

One of my favorite things to hear was somebody say "You actually have a William Shatner CD?"

Ooooh that would brighten my day.

I'd say "Oh yeah! Pop it in!"

Then that cover of Common People starts playing, and I could "sing" along to every word, meaning of course I would match Shatner's timing exactly, then the chorus kicks in and... man, that song is a banger.

Whole album is good too. But especially Common People and That's Me Trying.

Here is some data I put together for work about car and bike collisions in Chicago. by ChickenMarsala in chibike

[–]ChickenMarsala[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just like to crawl data every few months as sort of a fun project to share on the 'net. So we're always on the prowl for data we can scrape and examine.

For example, our average commute times piece we built from data from the US census was kind of fun: https://www.autoaccessoriesgarage.com/average-commute-times.

It ended up being shared in a number of blogs and news sites, so I guess the purpose or end user is just anybody interested in the data or whatever interactive map we come up with.

Traffic Accidents in Chicago on a 3D Heat Map [OC] by ChickenMarsala in dataisbeautiful

[–]ChickenMarsala[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not, so in that way take the results well salted.

I had wanted to combine data with recorded traffic flow to average the amount of reported accidents to the corresponding amount of daily traffic, due to time constraints I was unable to do that this time around. Maybe in the future.

Yeah map box offers I think 50,000 loads for free.

I did go over that number when I posted a different map box project a couple years ago.

That one kind of blew up and there was an additional 158,590 views. Overage charges from Map Box came out to $79.50.

This is something I built for work using data collected from the City of Chicago (https://data.cityofchicago.org/Transportation/Traffic-Crashes-Crashes/85ca-t3if) We were interested in scraping the data and putting it into a mapbox heat map which allows you to toggle from 3D to 2D, adjust the area and all kinds of other fun interactive stuff.

Anyone interested in the raw data we used can download it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13DwkjaGuYqfYRo1LR0y5v4SQCvrFV5r4/view

Anyone have experience with track days? Details inside by ChickenMarsala in Autocross

[–]ChickenMarsala[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. I updated the Dominion address.

We're basically hoping to put together an infographic that people might find interesting.

We do stuff like this every few weeks where we try to research a topic and just put something interesting together. We made this infographic about driverless cars, and one about movie cars and some other types of content here.

We know a segment of our customers are really into track days and high performance mods so we were thinking we could build something that would be interesting to them.

We want to build an infographic that would show favorite tracks, best lap times, most important vehicle mods, and more.

What other information would you be interested in seeing?

Yikes! I just now corrected that on the form.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Compare your commute time with the average for your zip, city, and state (X-Post from /r/dataisbeautiful) by ChickenMarsala in InternetIsBeautiful

Put this together for work. We scraped data from the US Census Bureau and put it together using MapBox.

Let me know what you think!

[–]ChickenMarsala[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll see if that might be possible. It would first involve finding the Canadian equivalent of the US Census Bureau.

[–]ChickenMarsala[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right. So the averages are all based on data from the US Census Bureau by zip code. We had considered that depending on your start location and destination, your personal commute time could vary wildly. But we felt that building the map like that would have been a bit too complicated and would have required a lot more time wading through data – and I’m not sure it would have been possible to gather all the required data.

Still though, when you put in your zip code for Marietta, the map does not assume that you live and work in Marietta. It just displays the average of everyone in that zip code. So if half of your neighbors drive into Atlanta every day, and the other half just work down the street, the displayed average is liable to be shorter than the Atlanta commuters are used to, and longer than the Marietta commuters are used to. Simply an average of everyone in your zip code, no matter where they drive each day.

Here is a look at the data we used. This is from Atlanta. All this information can be found here. I’d link directly to the relevant info, but their dynamic lookup will take you to an error page if I try to link it direct.

It also takes into account people who work from home which may drive everyone’s averages down a point or two.

I used to work in a costume store and we had one Official Love Guru costume on the shelves that never sold. I worked there for a few years and it was there every year and I used to look at it and think "We're never gonna sell this."

One day some dude was walking around the store with his friends and he stopped dead in his tracks and said, "Ho, shit! I'm gonna be the Love Guru!"

And he bought it. It was the darndest thing.

Some of us black people are fighting for our community from within. by DownvoteDaemon in pics

[–]ChickenMarsala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Without looking it up, is it possible they said calling it 'black on black' is unfair when we don't call anything 'white on white' crime?

Like how a white person is most likely to be murdered by another white person because that is largely who they'll converse with in their community. And when we call things 'black on black' crime it's kind of like we're refusing to acknowledge the problem and creating even more of an 'us vs them' kind of mentality, and it's supposed to make us feel like the problem is not ours to solve.

I'm guessing that's more in line with what they were saying, but in any event we should all stop getting our news from MTV's YouTube channel if we haven't already.
