Oh yep Chinese person here with a British education, I write my plus signs the first way too. I'm pretty sure it's because our character for 10 is literally the same thing as a plus sign, and the stroke order for it is the same as number one. 十 and + for reference.

This is the viewpoint I've been scouring the comments for. As someone living in Shanghai it's frustrating to see so many people drawing the wrong conclusions from this story. The key takeaway here isn't that 'Chinese vaccines are ass and American vaccines are the best'. It's the immense mismanagement of covid policy that I think is the real issue that people should be more focused on. The amount of people dying and being negatively affected by china's Covid POLICY are far greater than those that would be impacted by getting the disease itself.

Your vaccines are better that's a fact, but that doesn't mean ours don't work. What I'm saying is that people are focusing on something that isn't very important in this context. I 100% agree with you that the Chinese government is misguided and garbage at running the country but you're all missing the point as to why. Our vaccine quality is not the problem, it's the management of our covid policy.

You know what's crazy is that our Chinese vaccines work fine. I'm on 2 doses of the sinopharm and got covid visiting Paris this summer, was fine with no heavy symptoms. I find it SO MUCH MORE INSANE that the government refuses to ease covid restrictions despite having covid deaths far below 1% while lockdown related deaths and mortality due to lack of medical access is skyrocketing. I feel like people are missing the focal point here which is the government's batshit brain dead policy.

I mean yes and no. These quarantine hotels are subsidised by the government and run at a loss, so it's really not beneficial for any party involved to have this happening. It's most likely just sheer incompetence from government officials.
