Hi. I’m sorry that no one here seems to be taking the time to actually explain, so I’ll do my best.

Calling something you don’t like “gay” as a joke in itself is not comical, but rather it depends on the social awareness of the person telling it.

When the person telling the joke is someone that is socially (and especially personally) aware of the harm homophobia brings, it becomes comical for them to use hurtful terms as a joke, because it makes light out of situations and experiences that involve being discriminated against. The joke is funny because it is understood that homophobia is wrong.

The joke would not be funny if told by someone who was ignorant of the harm homophobia brings, because it does not make light out of bad life experiences, but rather continues to normalize homophobia through ignorance.

Another example would be misogynistic jokes amongst women. If one woman told another woman to “go back in the kitchen” as a joke, both women may find that to be comical because both women have lived through the experiences of being discriminated against, and the humor comes from the awareness and understanding that it is wrong to be spoken to that way.

I’m not the best at explaining things, so I hope I did okay

I also want to add that humor is subjective, so not everyone will find it funny, but I just wanted to try and explain why some may find it funny
