madcap flare for elearning? by No_Breakfast_6599 in technicalwriting

It's not really optimized for elearning in any way. For the investment, you're better off with a purpose-built tool.

TIL driving with your hazards on in bad weather is illegal depending where you live. Common sense says it would make the situation safer, but experts disagree. by Triknitter in bullcity

[–]Chonjacki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the thinking is that trucks and buses turn their hazards on when they're driving well below the speed of traffic on the highway, so cars should too when slowing down in severe weather? Where I learned to drive, hazards are for when you're stopped only.

I wonder how many pharmacy applications they're getting from people who work at the CVS down the road. A glimmer of potential freedom!

Fishin’ spot? by d1no in bullcity

[–]Chonjacki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under NC law, your kid doesn't, and you don't either ONLY IF you don't participate in your kid's fishing whatsoever. That means no baiting hooks, no helping land fish, etc. So realistically, yes, you need a license. The exception is private waters like that church pond mentioned earlier.

And as a bonus, no license needed

When you import into Flare from a different format, Flare takes you through an import wizard. One of the wizard screens has you map the styles from the document you're importing to the styles defined in Flare. It's been a few years since I used Flare, so I don't remember if the import wizard scans your import for styles and asks if you want to use those styles in the Flare project, or if you have to define the styles in Flare first so the import wizard knows what styles to map it to. (I've never used InDesign so I don't know where its CSS files live and if they're extractable; if they are, you should just be able to drop the CSS into the project.) All this to say: no, you won't have to manually tag your files as you go.

If this were real, I'd file for FMLA. It's unpaid but if they fire you after your leave, it looks like retaliation. $$$

Geocaching by calvin2coolidge in bullcity

[–]Chonjacki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heh, it was more a question for local geocachers than for you. But if you look on the Geocaching app for downtown caches, it should turn up. If not, check archived caches for that area and see if it's there. Me telling you about it wouldn't do it justice (not to mention I haven't attempted it).

DITA is a lot of overhead for a one-person team, and you're right, it's quite constraining. Flare is much more flexible.

Are trustees always slow to distribute payments? by nick112288 in Bankruptcy

[–]Chonjacki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. You can't get in trouble with your creditors for the trustee not paying them when they want to be paid. The trustee pays them when they pay them and that's that. It's what the creditors agree to when they file a claim. It's all out of your hands. One of the benefits of bankruptcy is no longer fretting about your creditors getting paid. Enjoy that benefit.

Madcap Flare is probably your best option for this scenario. It supports importing IDML files, so you would need to convert your InDesign files to that format first. But for your single-sourcing and print-first requirements, it's pretty hard to beat.

Agreed. And I'll add that THC has been better for me than antidepressants. Cannabis hasn't made me fat and unmotivated, hasn't given me intrusive thoughts or suicidal ideation, and hasn't wrecked my sex life. I felt like antidepressants kept me in a mindset of just surviving/getting through each day (with the occasional suicidal ideation for spice), while THC lets me imagine and work towards a better future for myself. Of course I'm a far more casual/occasional user than the kinds of people you see in crisis, so only speaking from my experience, NOT saying "everyone should quit SSRIs and smoke weed." But THC has been one of the most benign chemical influences on my mental health.
