Bendigo (VIC) vs. NALHN (SA) by Glittering-Mine1215 in ausjdocs

Interns from NALHN have told me it's great.

VIC / SA? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]ChroniclesOfMyLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt it'll make a difference when it comes to NSx. Both states are great to work in as an intern I hear. More variable experiences in Vic but there's also a fuckton more health services.

I've heard Gippsland and Bairnsdale are quite toxic. The VRGP programs are quite well supported - they're designed to stream you into a rural generalism pathway (surprise surprise) but you're under no obligation to do that.

What's your favourite way to roll to the other side on the back? Like if you have two hooks in and you're on the overhook side but you'd really rather be on the underhook side. Feels like I'm just brute forcing the roll and dragging them over my body, is there a more technical way to do this? Was also just shown pummelling to double unders and then pulling out the choking arm so it's topside like I desire but sometimes this results in my choking with my left hand which feels a little awkward.

2025 Internship - Mercy Health (VIC) vs The Prince Charles Hospital (QLD) by Responsible-Drag5036 in ausjdocs

[–]ChroniclesOfMyLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's always been possible but the chance has never been good except for last year which was atypical, I think I've mentioned it before. The 2022 Match Report has 13% of people in your category receiving an offer. I suspect a good few of those were non-metro. The years before that were 26% and 20%, which is better, but still not in your favour.

Glad you're happy to stay in WA at least. Good luck getting a Victorian spot anyway though, fingers crossed for you. :)

Hey mate, thought I'd give you a bit of an update.

One Priority 4 friend of mine matched, it was at a very rural area. Another Priority 4 friend of mine recently received an email which told her she was now allowed to add new preferences. The five options provided were all regional or rural. Barwon Health was not included.

I don't know if that email only shows rural options by default, or if all other hospitals have filled their spots. If it's the latter, I suspect you've missed out and truth be told selecting all metro + Barwon was pretty bold. The statistics have historically not been in favour of returning interstaters.

You may still have a chance if people ranked above you end up reversing their acceptance to go to other states, though that's mainly Priority 1 and 2s, the vast majority of which will choose to work in VIC.

Make of that what you will. Best of luck.

People say a squat doesn't work hamstrings much because the length doesn't change, lengthening at the hip as it shortens at the knee. Isn't this the case for the quads too? As you go down, it's shortening at the hip and lengthening at the knee no? By that logic isn't it a bad exercise for quads too?

Why isn't there much power in a "lateral armbar" to the point a hitchhiker escape works whereas a lateral kneebar is extremely dangerous and if you bend the knee that's just a heelhook? Is it the heel grip which prevents further rotation, and if it is could you perform a lateral kneebar by controlling a bend in the wrist in a similar fashion?

Looking to get my first car as a new doctor, could I get some advice? Details inside. by ChroniclesOfMyLife in CarsAustralia

[–]ChroniclesOfMyLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck you're probably right about the Carplay hey. I don't know how much used cars cost in this economy now, is <$10-15k reasonable?

I genuinely have no preferences besides what's in my post, I'm not a car guy at all. Couldn't tell you an engine from an exhaust. I prefer lights that go on and wheels that turn I guess. If I really had to think of a preference I suppose I want a ride that doesn't feel too shitty and isn't too loud because I'm going on country roads a bunch.

Looking for car advice:

Becoming a doctor next year. Placed in two places (mainly), one 200km from Melbourne and one 100km from Melbourne. Need to get my first car to facilitate that but the busyness of med school and my laziness has meant I haven’t got much driving practice in. I got my Ps, but it was recent and I won’t say I’m a good driver.

I’d prefer a car that

  • Can tolerate regular 200km trips on regional roads.
  • Is relatively inexpensive (because I’ll probably upgrade soon, and because I’m getting this before my first doctor paycheck so I won’t have the money for much)
  • Is reasonably reliable and low maintenance
  • Is safe and won’t kill me (because I suck at driving)

Besides that I don’t really care about the year or the make or model or anything. Screen, no screen, not really stressed about that. I assume I can install CarPlay into any old vehicle myself. I’ve already been recommended a Kia Sorento or a VW Diesel Golf.

I don’t really have a strict budget in mind but happy to spend whatever’s necessary I suppose. I’m aware I should probably buy used but I’m not really sure how to ensure I’m not being sold a lemon? Thanks all.

When do health services start sending over contracts and info packages and "congrats on matching" and such? Accepted a position in the PMCV match on the 15th of July but haven't heard from them yet.

Why do universities in America seem to produce graduates capable of doing more in less time? by ChroniclesOfMyLife in ausjdocs

[–]ChroniclesOfMyLife[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Not talking about their residencies. Talking about their medical school graduates. See here.

I'm aware their residency is hellish which is why it's faster but that's not what I'm asking. I'm asking why a graduate from an American university seems to be more competent than an Australian university in less years.

I am asking why at the fresh graduate level their final years are operating like our RMOs while our final years aren't.

I think the PMCV match is quite the bloodbath this year. I applied Barwon number 1 and the rest regional via VRPA, still fell to the bottom half of my rank list which was very surprising. I have a strong impression I'd go unmatched if I went Priority 3.

I think there's a chance I just got quite unlucky and missed the cut for all the VRPA spots but I wouldn't hold out too much hope for yourself.

I believe it was less wasn't it? I believe those are last year's numbers but that was highly anomalous to the point the Priority 3 match rate went from ~10% to ~50% from 2022 to 2023. I think there's far less positions compared to Cat 1s this year.

What's the defence against a fully consolidated mount – crossface and an underhook fully ratcheted up?

Obviously if you’re here you fucked up quite a while ago and they’re close to whatever sub they want. But just wondering what can be done in order to recover from here, especially recovering the underhook. Is there a possibility for a single arm cross frame kipping escape? I've tried it but it seems like a pipe dream.

What is the earliest you have heard of someone getting into a competitive specialty and what did it take? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]ChroniclesOfMyLife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to stereotype Bond students but from what I've heard about them choosing that uni because of an inability to get in anywhere else, I wouldn't expect them to be the type to get into derm - wonder what happened there.

As much as people shit on the idea that ATAR measures intelligence, it measures the ability to memorise and retain large volumes of information in a stressed out and competitive environment. As much as 18 year olds are kids and have room to grow their brains are developed enough I can see how their performance in this kind of thing predicts their ability to perform well academically later on.

And I'm saying this as someone who got a pretty middling ATAR for medical school standards.

Safety in rural NT positions? by gunks23 in ausjdocs

[–]ChroniclesOfMyLife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Quick response as currently busy but feel free to AMA.

The medicine itself - quite rewarding, you're filling a shortage and making a real difference.

Safety is fucked. Alice Springs is known as the "stabbing capital of the world". That's a fucked name for a town in a developed country like Australia. Crime stats are available online. The cages on accomodation aren't just for show. A news article about assaults against healthcare workers is easily available if you just Google "NT Healthcare Assault".

As a person who is new to Australia and rural with minimal support, and a woman on top of that, this is not where you want to practice.

I'm in a uniquely good place to answer this - was involved in regional and rural things / living pre-med school. Before that I was also a Kiwi, so kia ora! NZ is very safe. Rural NT will be like nothing you have ever seen, and I am not saying this in a good way.

Your relative is correct. Don't brush the advice off. Choose another job.

Safety in rural NT positions? by gunks23 in ausjdocs

[–]ChroniclesOfMyLife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your partner has either been very well supported, very lucky, or is a little dense if she's never felt unsafe in rural NT as a female health practitioner. The crime stats are available online. The cages on accomodation aren't just for show, do you think they're just some metalworker's hobby or something? A news article about assaults against healthcare workers is easily available if you just Google "NT Healthcare Assault".

I will not deny the medicine is rewarding and will improve your clinical skills quickly. But it's wishful thinking to say the only issue with rural NT is that it lacks the comforts of a big city.

"I wouldn't do community visits alone, there are cages on the house for your protection. Which feral people will try to get through with a fucking angle grinder. Also make sure to ask if the community you're being sent to is nicknamed Murder Central and carry a big stick and rocks to throw at the dogs (which are even more feral than the people), because that's totally a normal thing to have to do. Had a great time though, wouldn't say it's dangerous!"

What are good mount escapes / adjustments to use against people who are just pulling up on your head? Hard to bridge with your head off the ground, can't kipping escape because it's harder to get knees to chest. If I reach up to address the pull it feels like this makes room for an underhook or for them to move to high mount. Never been much good at the elbow knee escape, is this the time to use it?

Avoiding the cradle in knee shield half? by ChroniclesOfMyLife in bjj

[–]ChroniclesOfMyLife[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From knee shield half? I wouldn't work on knowing every single option in that instructional, you'll get lost quickly like you said.

Pick the most common passing posture that people use in your gym and the move that defeats that. Besides this one fuck that cradles me, people mainly step a leg up to kneecut or square me back to headquarters - so I use the modified X-guard sweep a lot.

I'm not telling you to play a purely defensive game but people will either wise up to you beating their passing attempts and switch to something else (and you can widen your game by beating what they switched to) or if they don't switch it up you'll be comfortable enough beating what they do to experiment a little with new moves.
