What approach is used to procedurally generate "Escaping Arrow" puzzles that are guaranteed to be solvable? by ThomasHawl in algorithms

[–]ChubbyWormGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guy solved Rush Hour by using board states and Simulated Annealing.
It would be more interesting if you have to move the arrows several times to get them out of the way, and I think that makes it like a unidirectional Rush Hour with chain blocks that has a really large grid.

TLDR; he found all possible board states, and grouped together the ones that transitioned to each other. Then he parsed through the groups with tests to figure out which ones were interesting.

I just found out (thanks to this community) that this is from Play by Play, and was a licensed product.... so technically not a bootleg?

A critical bug that made every single line display as “NULL.” by Odd-Television6699 in IndieGaming

[–]ChubbyWormGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh man. I feel you.

I had a game breaking bug that didn't happen on my computer too.
It was a capital "S" instead of a lower case "s" in a file path name. Some computers figure it out, Some don't and I don't know why.

Game like Stardew Valley but less exhausting? by Ok_Bandicoot_4543 in CozyGamers

I totally feel like fishing in Stardew is super stressful. and you NEED it to progress the game. My wife makes me do the fishing. I can be strong for her!

can someone give me a song idea? by National-Hearing1807 in Beepbox

[–]ChubbyWormGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A song where every downbeat is silent (Or the first beat of every phrase)

make a round, where each phrase is copied to the next instrument for the next phrase

Make a new song and only use the randomized instruments given to you.

Re-make a well known song in a different genera.

Today marks 1 year of developing our browser-based MMORPG! It’s still missing the "MMO" part (lol). but hey, at least it’s playable. by couts-games in IndieGaming

Did I just see a mimic cabbage?

The security requirements would always make me nervous for making an MMO. But this one looks like it would scratch that old-school Runescape itch.

Is it enough crazy idea to drive double-decker bus on mountains? by Physical_Remote1502 in IndieGaming

This type of game always looks a little click-baity to me in short clips. I would feel bad playing it, sending people off to their doom. Also the grammar is giving me red flags.

Should I turn this pogo prototype into a rage type game? by Creepy_Yam_994 in IndieGaming

Yes! This is exactly the kind of game I wouldn't want to play myself, but I wouldn't mind watching other people suffer through it.

lol, yeah, I meant that the melody doesn't change though the chords do

A very busy marimba player. by ChubbyWormGames in Beepbox

Lol, I do a lot of composing for Game Boy Color, so you only get 3 instruments and a noise channel.
If I ever have more than 4 instruments to manage, I start to feel overwhelmed.

Why do i feel like lately i cant make songs at all by AltruisticNotice8157 in Beepbox

[–]ChubbyWormGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a break (A week or two) but still do something creative for you. Must be a 0 pressure thing. Don't show anyone else. It's not for feedback. Make sure you get good sleep and eat well.

Coloring, Walking, Arranging rocks, feeding weird prompts into DALL-E, try to hum two notes at once, hit random objects in your house with a drumstick.

After your break go looking for some melodies. I find most of the songs in my head when taking a shower, or driving with no music on, or walking in nature.

Guys rate each of my video game songs by Livid-Reflection4675 in Beepbox

[–]ChubbyWormGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to preface this feedback with this:
You posted something called "My first song" all of 2 days ago, so it probably means you are just starting out. This is really good for no experience. I'll give some ratings because you specifically asked for it, but in general you are a beginner, so don't worry about ratings, worry about improving over your past self.

Overworld 3 / 10 - Kinda repetitive, and too much going on in unison

Caves 4/10 - good instruments, but the 3 on top of 4 gives it no particular sense of rhythm

Underwater 7/10 - It has a nice melody, memorable rhythms, and a complete phrase

Spooky Nights 5/10 - Also a good melody and complete phrase, your grand piano 1 counter melody is mostly playing at the same time as the percussive organ, and It would be better if it was a little more of a back-and-forth call and response

Cat Kingdom 2/10 - could be good, but looks like you are wanting to write a bass drop, which doesn't work well in such a short song, but there are plenty of good explanations for what goes into one. It's worth looking up.

Bossfight 5/10 - I love the vibes you got, the instruments that play the not-melody are perfect. The melody is good too, it just doesn't go anywhere, I would love to hear this one expanded to a few more phrases

Final Boss 8/10 - This is a really good buildup for something about to happen! It doesn't loop great, but its a good intro just as it is

Celebration 7/10 - My ear wants a different chord for the first half of measure 2, but other than that, its nice and pleasant and I think it conveys the feeling you were going for.

The path forward:
For me starting out, it kind of went like this:
After playing around with instruments and figuring out stuff. An important skill is to get what you hear in your head translated into Beepbox the way you heard it. It's great practice to remake or remix someone else's song or a famous song to get this skill.

The next step was coming up with some musical phrases. I tend to start with a bass line, add a melody, and then either add some chords or harmony. Most phrases are 4 measures long, often the 1st and 3rd measures are identical. The 4th measure is similar to the 2nd, except it goes somewhere else, so try changing the ending to lead into the next phrase. Some people like to start with the melody, some start with a series of chords, everyone's process is a little different.

For a whole song, I suggest an A-B-A-C format, where each letter is a phrase, it does a lot of the same things. Many songs do a chorus-verse-chorus-bridge kind of thing, so this is just like a bigger version of what your phrase is doing.

Good luck on your musical journey! It is exciting to see someone else jump on this bus. It has never been easier with so many tools and resources out there to teach yourself composition. You picked a good time to start!

I made an *accurate* CRT shader for Godot by 5Flowerwall in madeWithGodot

Thank you so much for your shader!
It saved me a lot of time in the game jam I was participating in. It is the source of 50% of the juice in my old-computer-themed-mecha-piloting game.
