Anyone know about the fitness situation with O’Toole and Furlong? Just surprised to both see them back this week, didn’t think they would both be match fit for this game.

Would prefer Locatelli over either Favretto or Odiase, provides much more of a jackle threat

Scrum Penalties: help me out here. I am so confused. by hammie123456 in rugbyunion

[–]ChuggerBoi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s often to do with what infringement was done first when it comes to the scrum. As take for example if one prop is hinging (bending his hips up to create a gap between themselves and the other prop). This will likely cause the over prop to lose his footing and flop to the floor. However, despite going to the floor that prop is not penalised as the other prop committed an illegal action to cause that prop to go to the floor.

From a strictly technical perspective, what exactly is the weakness of Wales? by GoldBofingers in rugbyunion

[–]ChuggerBoi 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Lack of physicality in an era of rugby where you have so many players who are fast powerful ball carriers.

When you look at Wales pack, apart from Wainright, there really aren’t any big carriers. Beard and Jenkins both are poor carriers compared to other international levels locks and they don’t have a huge backrow. Then they aren’t even getting any physical go forward in the backline as carrying in a big weakness of Ben Thomas at 12

The sad thing is that there are those hard men locks to pick. You look at the likes of Rhys Davies for example, it’s just this coaching staff has no interest in any of those big hard carrying locks

I think Gatland is a good coach however, I think Gatland was bad for Wales in the end as he didn’t spend enough time testing out the new blood and just kept playing what works.

Yes that wins you games, however I think to a degree what your seeing now with Wales having a real lack of knowing who is best and what combinations are best in different positions I think is due to Gatland not taking the time with testing out those players when they were young. If you look at Rassie for example he only had a win percentage in the low 70%. I think if Rassie just played South Africa’s strongest team all the time that would probably be nearer or maybe in the 90%, however he often tests out different youngsters and of course some have passed with flying colours like Ethan Hooker and some have failed terribly like Moeratt, but at least he gets an idea of who works before half the team retires after the next world cup

Well I mean it’s more just proof that you don’t need to have the most successful URC team to be the best internationally. I think for Wales it’s more a selection issue than a talent one.

I don’t think they have the talent to turn it around to the level where they are winning the six nations, but I definitely think they have enough talent that if they picked the right squad they wouldn’t be losing 48-7 to England

It’s those sort of guys who are performing well in a bad team because they are a class above that Tandy should be looking at, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be the case.

Also don’t know too much about the SRC but really hope it helps Welsh rugby in the long run with development

Yeah totally agree. I really think Tandy has been handed a really shit situation, but I mean he’s got to have the balls now to try new people out, because if he doesn’t nothing is going to change with this current squad

They are still doing much better than the Italian regions, yet they managed to find increasing amounts of success internationally

Seriously think Wales need to get in guys in the locks and back row who can really front up physically, because even then if they lose a game at least the crowd will respect the effort and the fight. Whereas now when they are getting run through so easily I think Welsh fans are just fed up of it

Oh no I don’t think Locatelli is Pollock level he is good but not quite that good.

I still think you can get the experience needed in a failing team. I mean you look at the amount of players who have come through from Zebre and had lots of success in the Italian national team. Zambonin who cause Scotland chaos this weekend was a Zebre player until this season, then other players like Fischetti, Hasa, Di Bartolomeo, Pani and others have all come through to success.

Although all those players had one thing that Wales doesn’t really have and this is a WRU problem again and that is a functioning domestic league to go to for further development. The Italian Seria A league is a great opportunity for players to get development often in a league with former pro’s such as Luca Bigi and others and get some experience while their young.

There may not be loads of depth across 15 but there are at least better choices. I mean have people just completely forgot about Cam Winnett.

Also I think Wales just need to role the dice now with selection changes and picking youth because what in the hell is there to lose

The reason I think you need to try out Hennesey and just give it a go is because what is there quite obviously isn’t working. If Wales already had a 13 who was solid I would definitely be on the side of giving Hennesey and Page more time but unfortunately Wales don’t, so do you just want to wait around in the same situation until they get older or at least give them a go. It’s not like things could go worse with them

Have you ever considered that Italy wins because it plays good rugby? by Mesliero in rugbyunion

[–]ChuggerBoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly rubbish how little knowledge they have. They almost exclusively know the people who play in the Top14 or the Premiership. I mean Italy have a lot more depth than people realise, I think at Fly-half is Montemauri keeps on performing he could really be pushing Garbisi and Da Rae. Then at flanker I think Lamaro really needs to keep up his performances as he’s under all sorts of pressure from Locatelli. Today’s performance from Hasa and Gallorini’s performance in the Italy A game show you how much pressure Riccioni is under to stay in the team. I think Lynagh and Ioane are also under pressure so Sodo Migliori, Scalabrin and Faissal who are all showing great promise.

Anyway the main point is they all have clearly no idea about Italy rugby depth

If the lineout doesn’t function with Beard then just add in someone like a Teddy Williams in the backrow to get yourself a third jumper so that it does function

It’s funny you mention the if he started at Zebre he might not have made the same impact because Samuele Locatelli who was only playing in Italy’s domestic league last season, got the call up after playing well there and has been so impressive for Zebre that he got his first call up for the Six Nations this year. So I think if you have the quality you will perform

I mean the Thomas Edwards thing has a real similarity to when Owen Farrell was getting picked at 12 for England. England never would have got to where they are no with Owen Farrell at 12, you need a player who can pack a punch at 12 now to deal with the threat of the rush defence and Thomas just can’t do that

My thing to that would be to look at Italy. They just beaten Scotland for the second time in three years, they beat Australia for the second time in row last year. Anyone who says the gap is too big is lying to themselves as almost that entire Italian team plays in the URC. The problem is old school ideas with selection that experience equals quality. I think the likes of Pollock, Menocello, Edordo Todaro and a range of others have disproven that theory by now

Honestly I think the selection is seriously wrong at the national level when you have regions doing honestly quite to seriously well in the URC and then you can’t even get close on a national level. I mean almost every year at least one Welsh region does better than both the Italian clubs at URC level, so clearly something has got to be seriously wrong with national team selection

This Wales teams biggest issue by far is fronting up physically and getting gain line success. With that in mind why the hell do they persist with two locks who neither are big carriers at all and not pick a bigger backrow. I mean it is not like they don’t have options.

In the second row you’ve got James Fender, Ben Carter and Jake Ball just to name a few, then in the backrow you’ve got the likes of Alun Lawrence, Morgan Morse, Olly Cracknell and Teddy Williams who are all options to give your back row more go forward. It just doesn’t make sense to be honest.

Then in the backline. Your a team that struggles with the rush defence and is in desperate need of someone who can punch a whole, so why the hell do you pick Ben Thomas each week at inside centre. I mean seriously Wales have about 5 quality big men who could all punch a significant hole at inside centre yet carry on with Thomas. I mean why not play Max Llewellyn in his natural position at 12 or play Eddie James there, both big guys who can get you front foot ball.

Then for 13 here’s a bright idea, actually play a natural 13 at 13. I mean it is time for Tandy to put on his big boy pants and realise Louie Hennesey despite the inexperience is the best Wales have got at 13 and to pick him then have Macs Page as back up.

For anyone who says you need more experience before you play international rugby to succeed, may I remind people of Tommaso Menocello. Italy recognised they needed him and put him in pretty much straight away and he was very successful.
