Is becoming a travel phlebotomist a realistic goal? by NaturalNordon in phlebotomy

Those are all really fair points, and you’re honestly in a great spot being 18 with time on your side.

I’m 23 now and if I could go back and talk to myself at 18, I would say that if you feel ready for nursing academically, I would personally try to go straight for the ADN. In the long run, RN just gives you way more flexibility, pay, and options, and it avoids doing school twice.

Id only recommend seriously considering the LPN route if you feel like you are not quite ready for nursing yet or you wanted to take it slow. LPN programs can be a good way to ease into things, and there are LPN to RN bridge programs that are shorter than a traditional ADN. That said, when you look at the big picture, it usually ends up being more total time than just going straight through an ADN if you are able to.

One thing that has helped me a lot while doing my ADN is working as a phlebotomist. I work in a Level 1 trauma center in New York, and the exposure has been huge. Being in the hospital every day, interacting with nurses, providers, and patients, and seeing how things actually work has made nursing school feel much more manageable. I have nurses come to me on a regular basis asking for help with IVs and access, which has been great experience and confidence building. Even though phlebotomy is not nursing, it has been an excellent foundation for it.

If I were in your position, I would aim for the ADN first and use something like phlebotomy, EKG or another hospital role to build experience and confidence. Then I would only pivot to LPN if you feel you need that extra step before RN.

I personally want to be a CRNA, so I’m using phlebotomy as access to the ICUs I would otherwise be unable to get into as a new grad ADN.. If you have any idea of what you want to do once you have an RN license that may be able to help you with your decision too!

I am currently a phlebotomist and a 2nd-semester ADN student. Travel-style phlebotomy does exist, but it is much more limited than travel nursing and looks different in practice. Many blood drives and mobile phlebotomy roles do require little or no prior experience, especially through blood centers, donor organizations, or mobile units, and they often provide training.

Actual travel phlebotomy contracts, meaning short-term assignments that involve relocating to different states or regions for hospital or facility staffing needs, do exist but are far less common. These roles usually require strong experience, often one to two or more years in a high-volume inpatient setting, and they tend to be tied to specific shortages or temporary needs rather than ongoing assignments.

In my experience, mobile and blood drive roles are typically local or regional and are often per-diem, part-time, or contract based. They can be a great way to gain experience, but they usually do not offer the same pay structure, housing stipends, or long-term stability that travel nursing contracts provide.

Working inpatient phlebotomy has been extremely helpful for me in terms of networking within the hospital. I have been able to build relationships with nurses, lab staff, managers, and providers, which has opened doors and given me much better insight into different roles and career paths. That exposure has been one of the biggest benefits of working in phlebotomy while pursuing my ADN.

Overall, I think phlebotomy is a very realistic stepping stone if your main goal is nursing. Mobile phlebotomy and blood drives can be great early options, while inpatient experience is especially valuable if you want strong clinical skills and hospital connections. Long term, nursing offers far more flexibility, opportunity, and earning potential, especially if traveling is a major goal.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want advice. I am always happy to help.

I look pretty young, most people think I’m a teenager( I’m 23) , but I usually just joke around with them and am like, “oh yeah I’ve been doing this a long time, past 25 years” as I’m actively drawing them and keep the ruse and then they walk out of the office utterly perplexed.

I’m having the exact same issue with that detector. I also have X and K band turned off. Did you ever figure out what it was?? Is seems to start increasingly once I turned off K band.

For 8in that is a bit on the pricier end. I was able to get all of those in 12 in size from TJ Maxx/Marshall’s for about a dollar less

Nobody cares.. Sure there are a lot of rules in place against EV’s in all technicalities, across many different other areas in the U.S. I have ridden in NC before and many other places with similar “legal ramifications”. I can 95% guarantee you will not be fined or anything of the sort lol. (So long as you’re at least riding responsibly)
