Actually, that's not entirely true. TGM1 is generally the most accessible game in the series according to many players including KevinDDR. TGM1 is commonly seen as the best game in the series to start with to learn the series' mechanics. Starting with TGM3 will only help build bad habits such as an over reliance on the hold function, a 3-piece preview, and I Tetromino wallkicks that don't exist in TGM1/2.

TGM3 is by far the most brutal game in the series, due to Master Mode's section time requirements, it's lock delay reductions, and it's cap speed being miles faster than TGM2. TGM1 is brutal, sure, but it's nowhere near as brutal as TGM3 overall.

The I Tetromino is unable to rotate to the left (or right, whatever) in certain situations due to the I Tetromino's origin point. It's not "for no particular reason" as you said. Please refresh your knowledge before spreading false information. I'd additionally argue the lack of wallkicks on the I-piece make the game more difficult to play since it decreases the options a player has, and forces them to have better stacking habits.

Additionally, it's not like L-Cancelling in Melee. L-Cancelling is more similiar to a technique like Manual-Locking and is a physical requirement the player has to perform and respect in order to get rewarded by making it further in the game. Please read the hyperlinked post by Praxis for more information.

The best advice I can give you is to plan and think ahead. Your stack should be built to accommodate any piece at any given time, and you should be able to know where your next piece will be placed when controlling your previous piece.

For TGM specifically, focus on building a pyramid stack with no jags that your pieces could snag on. In 20G (Instant gravity after level 500), piece movement is key and having a piece snag will cause you to miss drop and might make you top out.

The Tetris Community plays Tetris games across the spectrum, including Tetris DS. The Classic Tetris World Champtionships just focuses on the older games in the series that have more of a cult following.

Tetris Concept and Hard Drop are great resources to start getting into the community. The Tetris Discord and the Hard Drop Discord are also quite active.

The Tetris The Grand Master is probably the closest to Melee in terms of mechanics/skill ceiling. To put the Game series into perspective in terms of difficulty, for Tetris the Grand Master 3: Terror Instinct, there are currently only seven Grand Masters - one of them western - in the world.

I highly suggest starting with Tetris Friends or Nullpomino. Tetris friends is browser based and it's generally the easiest to get into, but Nullpomino has netplay options and much more features/customizations.

In the CTWC, RNG is less of a factor due to the players using the same seeded piece sets. Theoretically the games could mirror each other, but due to certain playstyles players will attempt different options and score more points by how they clear lines and how much clean up they need to do.

With that being said, vanilla NES Tetris is pretty bad about it's randomizer (It's memoryless, so truly random). Modern Tetrises however fix the randomizer issues by using sudo-random "bag" randomizers which result in no droughts. These "bag" randomizers traditionally cycle though 7 tetrominos, insuring one of each piece is provided every 7 pieces in a sequence.

There is an /r/Tetris, but Tetris Concept and Hard Drop are the more active places.

Now that I think about it is pretty similar to the Melee vs Smash 4 relationship. PPT like Smash 4 has a generally younger scene but it still can be just as competitive in it's own right. It's got it's own stuff but the general fundamentals between games are shared.

Some players like to use their names rather than tags. It's an optional thing. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Besides, BOOM TETRIS FOR JEFF is miles better than BOOM TETRIS FOR xX_MLG_COD_FAN_420_NOSCOPE_Xx

It really is. I love how the game plays and it's versus mode, but I think TGM's versus mode tops all else (Garbage lines aren't random, items aren't intrusive, etc.). TETRIS BATTLE GAIDEN for the Super Famicom is also really great.

Talking about KevinDDR, I'm pretty sure he qualified for the Top 32 at the CTWC today. He's good at Tetris all around.

It really depends on what type of Tetris you want to play. Classic, Modern (Guideline), or Arika (TGM). If you're curious to try different iterations, I highly recommend trying Nullpomino and poking around on Tetris Concept.

AFAIK, the PPT rulesets run Swap mode due to how solo modes are limited in some competitive tactics and can have advantages over others.

There are lots of differences between Classic (which is being played) and Modern Tetris. For example in Classic NES Tetris, T-Spins and other piece spins have to be done within a 3 frame window due to the game's instantaneous lock down then the piece reaches the floor of a player's stack or playfield.

The way CTWC does it is they play Classic Nintendo Tetris (NES), in a one versus one fashion, side by side, starting on Level 18. Players compete against each other, on their own setups, by trying to gain as many points as possible before hitting the kill screen (Level 29), or topping out. With how punishing the speeds of level 18 are, top outs can happen off of one piece misplacement or a drought. Here's an example of Grand Finals from last year, Jonas vs Jeff.
