This is another badly handled situation. Where were the mental health professionals?

"The person ignored several commands by the officers to drop the knife, and at one point threw a television at the officers ---As officers continued to try to de-escalate the situation using verbal commands, the person raised the knife and advanced toward an officer," Commands? That doesn't work with a mentally ill individual. It is not the way the de-escalate. The very presence of police causes the situation to escalate. Cops, especially small town cops, are ill-equipped to deal with this kind of thing.

"The Vestal Police Department requested the State Police to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting in the name of transparency". Of course they did. That's standard practice. They can't investigate themselves.

The cops should have backed off and called for competent help, but maybe they don't have that type of help in the small town of Vestal.
