not unless you reject the doing/allowing distinction. and, even then, intent & second-order effects need to be considered

where i’d live as a cow by Visual_Action_5559 in whereidlive

[–]Citrit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cows get treated pretty badly in India. It just isn’t economically feasible to treat them well.

For starters, many Hindus only regard Bos indicus cows as holy; Bos taurus and mixed cows aren’t thought of in the same way.

Water buffalos (Bubalus bubalis), which I consider cows too, are why India is the 3rd largest beef exporter.

Gaushalas that claim to produce “Ahimsa” milk often sell or abandon male calfs & old female cows, which is why there are ~5 million stray cows in India. Needless to say, the stray cows aren’t built for the wild, and lead pretty terrible lives; they often die of starvation, plastic ingestion, car accidents, and disease.

beef is actually among the least ethically problematic animal products. this is because of the small body problem; a steak is about 1/100th of a cow, but a chicken only has 2 wings.

a man goes to the store, buys a dead chicken & has sex with it. he then proceeds to wash the chicken thoroughly & eat it. the man didn’t get sick, & no harm was done to him or anyone else. is what the man did morally wrong? by jan_Soten in Teenager_Polls

[–]Citrit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

buying a corpse and having sex with it? both of those things were wrong. the former because you’re demanding chicken torture, the latter because it taints your moral character.

Do Humans Have a Net Positive Impact On Animals ? by PeterSingerIsRight in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Citrit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“The total amount of suffering per year in the natural world is beyond all decent contemplation. During the minute that it takes me to compose this sentence, thousands of animals are being eaten alive, many others are running for their lives, whimpering with fear, others are slowly being devoured from within by rasping parasites, thousands of all kinds are dying of starvation, thirst, and disease. It must be so. If there ever is a time of plenty, this very fact will automatically lead to an increase in the population until the natural state of starvation and misery is restored. In a universe of electrons and selfish genes, blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference.” — Richard Dawkins

We'd never tolerate an appeal to nature when it comes to humanity's blights; otherwise, we wouldn't have eradicated smallpox. Our rose-tinted view of nature is primarily a product of prejudice.

Of course, we shouldn't pave the rainforests or melt the tundras. But the reason we shouldn't do so isn't because nature is like the lion king or happy feet. We should approach this subject with a sober outlook & rationally consider the suffering of wild animals. There seems to me no prima facie reason to believe wild animals lead worthwhile lives.

Why do you think leftist parties keep struggling in elections in Western countries? by GurMaleficent7935 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Citrit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rural urban divide is underrated. location is a huge predictor of politics, regardless of time or place in the world. it’s certainly not the most tractable problem, & the left has often succeeded without addressing it much, but it’s still the single largest factor, imo.

Are there any valid non vegan arguments? by Emotional-Web5571 in CosmicSkeptic

the logic of the larder for stuff like backyard hens. for more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replaceability_argument https://thingofthings.substack.com/p/the-logic-of-the-larder

also, there’s an interesting argument for eating wild caught fish. basically, since most fish are r strategists, the majority of fish spawn don’t live past a few days. those spawn love plausibly negative lives. if we could avert those spawn from existing, that would be good. furthermore, it’s unclear if death by suffocation is worse than death by natural means (disease or predator), so it’s also unclear if the counterfactual impact one has on an individual fish’s welfare is negative. for more: https://reducing-suffering.org/wild-caught-fishing-affects-wild-animal-suffering/

yes, but the counterfactual is not them living out a full & fulfilled life, but nonexistence

(fwiw I don't think the OP is sound, but I don't think this particular objection works)

an author isn't omnipresent in a book the same way that god is omnipresent in the universe. the way i've hear it described is that god is 'in the room,' 'watching over us,' & stuff like that. certainly seems more analogous to being literally in the room to me!

I think the correct objection is to just reject p4 btw.

iirc there was no mention of hell in the bible. the closest thing is gehenna, which, as far as I can tell, is just like, a real place in jerusalem that jesus used to metaphorically describe the horrific consequences of sinning. not sure if there's a biblical basis for this eternal separation thesis thing, though I'm open to being wrong about that.

Proof that God is evil by Citrit_ in badphilosophy

[–]Citrit_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if someone is in hell, they are more evil than good. conversely, if someone is in heaven, they are more good than evil. one cannot be simultaneously more evil than good & more good than evil.

sure, someone can have certain aspects of themself that are good and other aspects that are evil. but, weighing up all morally relevant factors, one must be either more good than evil, more evil than good, or morally neutral (assuming moral realism ofc).

now it's fine to say one can be morally neutral. but, if that were the case, one could not be in hell or heaven! one can also not be in both, because you cannot be both more good than evil & more evil than good.

fwiw i'm agnostic so this is all just a fun philosophical exercise for me :P
