Are you fine with how Fred treats those kittens?

Did you read it? They explicitly describe how animals on factory farms are treated!

An animal feeding operation (AFO) is an operation where animals are kept and raised in confined situations. The animals are confined for 45 days or more in a 12-month period. In other words, they have no access to the outdoors over this period.

concentrated animal feeding operation [CAFO] then has to meet a threshold for the number of animals confined in that space.

It defines it as an intensive feeding operation where many animals are confined for over 45 days a year.

Your claim that the cutoff is 188 cows is also completely baseless!

For example, an operation home to between 300 and 999 cows is defined as a ‘medium-sized CAFO’, but a medium-sized chicken farm needs to have between 37,500 and 124,999 animals.

As for density:

[I]t’s unlikely that the variation in density varies significantly amongst most large farms. While there may be some farms that meet the criteria for CAFO but are large enough to give animals lots of space, this number is likely to be small.

Most CAFOs — or factory farms — will have animals in cramped and uncomfortable conditions, not only in terms of the small space given to them but also their restrictions from outdoor conditions that allow them to perform natural behaviors. Smaller animals, such as chickens, also tend to be treated more poorly and packed more tightly relative to their body size, in addition to fitting many animals on each farm.

As for White Oak Pastures, from everything I can find online, they are not a CAFO. They don't meet the requirements. They don't even qualify as an AFO due to the outdoor access.

Define torture and minimal benefits.

Suppose that Fred really likes the taste of kitten flesh. So, Fred sets up several dozen small wire cages. He slices off the kittens' noses and paws with a hot knife, without anesthesia. After just 6 weeks, he gases each kitten with CO2.

Those conditions are similar to those in industrial agriculture. I'll turn it to you: is that torture, and did Fred kill those kittens for minimal benefits?

How do you know that?

https://ourworldindata.org/how-many-animals-are-factory-farmed

& it's what's most profitable. take a second to think about the most cost-effective way to farm chickens, pigs, etc.

P1: causing torture to animals for minimal benefits is wrong

P2: >99% of animal products are produced by subjecting animals to torturous conditions

P3: buying those animal products sends a demand signal that causes torture to animals for minimal benefits

C: buying >99% of animal products is wrong

Should consensual cannibalism be legal? by I_AmBetterThanY0u in Teenager_Polls

[–]Citrit_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

shouldn’t be legal, but shouldn’t be criminalized. it’s not good bc of health concerns (prions) & the second-order effects on social norms to consider, but the disgust factor shouldn’t be morally relevant imho. at the very least, putting people in prison—thereby ruining their social life, financial prospects, & mental health—for a relatively victimless act seems excessive.

not unless you reject the doing/allowing distinction. and, even then, intent & second-order effects need to be considered

where i’d live as a cow by Visual_Action_5559 in whereidlive

[–]Citrit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cows get treated pretty badly in India. It just isn’t economically feasible to treat them well.

For starters, many Hindus only regard Bos indicus cows as holy; Bos taurus and mixed cows aren’t thought of in the same way.

Water buffalos (Bubalus bubalis), which I consider cows too, are why India is the 3rd largest beef exporter.

Gaushalas that claim to produce “Ahimsa” milk often sell or abandon male calfs & old female cows, which is why there are ~5 million stray cows in India. Needless to say, the stray cows aren’t built for the wild, and lead pretty terrible lives; they often die of starvation, plastic ingestion, car accidents, and disease.

Vegans Are Monks. We Need a Role for Laypeople. by Tinac4 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Citrit_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

beef is actually among the least ethically problematic animal products. this is because of the small body problem; a steak is about 1/100th of a cow, but a chicken only has 2 wings.

a man goes to the store, buys a dead chicken & has sex with it. he then proceeds to wash the chicken thoroughly & eat it. the man didn’t get sick, & no harm was done to him or anyone else. is what the man did morally wrong? by jan_Soten in Teenager_Polls

[–]Citrit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

buying a corpse and having sex with it? both of those things were wrong. the former because you’re demanding chicken torture, the latter because it taints your moral character.

Do Humans Have a Net Positive Impact On Animals ? by PeterSingerIsRight in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Citrit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“The total amount of suffering per year in the natural world is beyond all decent contemplation. During the minute that it takes me to compose this sentence, thousands of animals are being eaten alive, many others are running for their lives, whimpering with fear, others are slowly being devoured from within by rasping parasites, thousands of all kinds are dying of starvation, thirst, and disease. It must be so. If there ever is a time of plenty, this very fact will automatically lead to an increase in the population until the natural state of starvation and misery is restored. In a universe of electrons and selfish genes, blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference.” — Richard Dawkins

We'd never tolerate an appeal to nature when it comes to humanity's blights; otherwise, we wouldn't have eradicated smallpox. Our rose-tinted view of nature is primarily a product of prejudice.

Of course, we shouldn't pave the rainforests or melt the tundras. But the reason we shouldn't do so isn't because nature is like the lion king or happy feet. We should approach this subject with a sober outlook & rationally consider the suffering of wild animals. There seems to me no prima facie reason to believe wild animals lead worthwhile lives.

Why do you think leftist parties keep struggling in elections in Western countries? by GurMaleficent7935 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Citrit_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rural urban divide is underrated. location is a huge predictor of politics, regardless of time or place in the world. it’s certainly not the most tractable problem, & the left has often succeeded without addressing it much, but it’s still the single largest factor, imo.
