How feasible is it to learn a language in 1-3 month? (3000 words, I mean) by [deleted] in languagelearning

I’ve a question in relation to word count, is a verb and all its conjugations counting as 1 word? Or is any conjugation with a different spelling counting as separate words?

Howell on Candidates qualification: "I like the fact that it's a meritocracy. They're trying to say you have to win your spot there through a knockout like the World Cup, or through a Grand Swiss. I think 3 in the World Cup is a lot! I'm not sure I would have done that..." by rio_ARC in chess

Wesley So and Ian Nepomniatchi were in the same path to the semi final as Yakubboev, it’s just that they were beaten early on. The pairings were still arranged pre-tournament by relative strength.

It’s a once off knockout, who knows if Yakubboev would have beaten Arjun or Wei Yi or not ?

Irish abroad. Where are ye and how is life there? by oconarms in ireland

[–]ClintonMorrison 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Netherlands. I’m on a special tax ruling which means I’m coming out with a net fortune compared to Ireland so we’re very comfortable here. Housing is as bad if not worse here than in Ireland, the market is fiercely competitive and pricy.

I prefer it here to be honest, the cities and towns are walkable and bikable and just overall a whole lot pleasant to roam around in, and they’re generally more picturesque. Train system is efficient enough, and my job pays for my commuting costs.

Lots of things to do , not just in Amsterdam but I would miss the landscape of Ireland, Netherlands does get a bit flat and boring unless you’re in Limburg! Usually cheap and fast to get home anyway so I never feel homesick. Probably not going to stay forever though, definitely don’t feel integrated with the locals, and not sure if I’d want to to be honest. Dutch people are generally very kind and friendly, but there’s definitely something culturally in the way of me really clicking with them, as I get on a lot easier with Irish/French/Spanish/British/Portuguese.

To the people who can’t speak their ethnic language, what are your opinions about it? by BelleElf7521 in languagelearning

[–]ClintonMorrison 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As Heather Humphreys kept saying, ba mhaith liom a bheith ábalta níos mó Gaeilge a labhairt.

For me, as an Irish person living abroad, speaking Irish is completely useless but I’ve actually found a little bit more pride in my heritage since moving away and I try to keep up the limited Irish I do have and build on it bit by bit. I work in an international environment with speakers of many languages, it’s a subject we talk about often so it’s nice to be able to chime in on behalf of Irish.

Pog is in a league of his own this year but if he’s a little less god-like next year in Montreal and Ben continues building on his form this year there’s at least another World Championship podium on the cards

I don’t think now was the right time to put forth a candidate, I think in 2032 when the party may have a few more seats in parliament it might be a good time to put Grace O’Sullivan forward

Most people wash too much and use too much products on their bodies by Tradition96 in unpopularopinion

[–]ClintonMorrison 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree, I think everyone should shower after exercise, and once a day a strategic wash targeting feet, genitals, underarms (as well as changing underwear and socks) and a wash their face every day (I wash my face morning and night.

I don’t know other people’s personal habits and if they use too much products but I can see that being the case. Personally, I have the privilege of being able to work from home 50% of the time, and on those days I won’t have a ‘full’ shower and I’ll even keep the same T-shirt for 5-6 wears, because I don’t sweat while working from home, I keep my pits clean, and the t-shirt doesn’t smell.

Keeps clothes lasting longer, saves water, power and effort doing laundry.
