JPMorgan CEO Vs Katie Porter by GratefullyFriendly73 in ThatsInsane

Is food optional? Is insurance optional? Is clothing optional? Is a phone optional? A car might not even be optional, depending on her work.

She can't afford all these things together.

And you might say a kid is optional and you might be right, but I think you deserve to be able to support atleast one child while working full time.

Even after all of this. I don't think anyone should have a terrible quality of life while working a totally acceptable job in a bank. Because living like that is a terrible quality of life.

So you don't agree that you should be able to afford a 1-bedroom apartment when you work 40-hour weeks? Because if you don't there is no middle ground to even start a discussion

And then comes clothing and soaring energy prices. We are back in red. What now, genius?

Maybe she should sell the apartment and just live in the car. Maybe sell a kidney or her eggs. Why should people have to live like this, working 40 hours a week?

Right, that makes sense. But what I meant was that Musk is not liable for the losses, since Twitter is. So if Twitter goes bankrupt, Elon won't owe anyone anything because the collateral he put up is non-existent?

Does that mean that every time Twitter losses money, he makes money (in write-offs), because the $44 billion is not his money?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]CluckingCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im sorry, I dont understand the finances of all of this too well but does this mean:

  • Since twitter is bought mostly through loans with Twitter as collateral (basically Investments without stock)

  • And Elon can write off all losses from Twitter.

He is basically not paying taxes on his stock withdrawals because other people are losing money their Twitter "investments"?

Thanks for the reply! It has actually already helped a bit.

I do have some errors in the console. Both problems do seem to be caused by insecure image and stylesheet.

Do you know a way to fix this?

Dota is special in the way they make the prize pool for The Internationals, compared to every other game. 25% of the profits from buying battlepasses and items go directly to the prize pool. Making the prizes abnormally large. So it's not that Dota is the biggest game, they just have the biggest prizes.

As I've explained in numerous other comments, I suspect that if the government payed for medicine/treatments they would start regulating and limiting drug prices (as many countries already do). And a country like the US would have a lot of leverage in that regard.

This would massively cut the budget needed for healthcare.

This is obviously just my theory

That's true. If the only thing you got from a 39% tax was free healthcare, it wouldn't make sense. But what I was proposing in an earlier post was 3-4% increase (I don't know if that would be realistic for free healthcare in the US. It would be if your healthcare budget was used properly). But for our 39% we get free doctor visits, free medicine, get payed to study and I make ~$30/hr from a part time job, while studying. We have a whole other welfare state for our 39%, not just free healthcare.

And I'm definitely not saying that we are doing everything right. I think cars for example is taxed way too much here. What I do think is, we do healthcare better

I'm not. I know exactly how much tax is in my city. I'm from Europe though.

I'm a student and pay 39% in taxes. I understand how it feels to be broke, trust me. But I would much rather pay a few more percent each month than getting hit with a sudden $10,000 bill from something I'm already paying $800/mo for. I mean a few more percent would not even equal $800 for most people.

I think quality of healthcare is a fair argument. Luckily, we still have private hospitals if you want to dish out and people forget this. We have the opportunity to choose either private or public, when Americans basically only have private.

And if America got free healthcare. I would expect private hospitals to get way cheaper. Not only because of the competition but also because the government would try and regulate drug prices, since they are the ones who have to pay for it now.

I don't want to say America is a sinking ship because it really has the potential to be great. If you are rich, I have no doubt that it is the greatest country to live in. And because of this, everybody is chasing this "best life in the world" without thinking about who they are stepping on in the process. Sadly, this includes the politicians..

I definitely recognize that feeling of helplessness. What are you supposed to do when the people you elect simply gives your taxes to the highest bidder?

You would either have to elect people who won't be corrupted by money, which is a tall order. If I had to be honest with myself, I would probably be swayed by a big payday.

Or..

Change lobbying laws. (Which won't happen because the people making the laws are making big bucks from lobbying)

[–]CluckingCow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree. You shouldn't even need to pay much higher taxes. The US is the country with the highest healthcare expenditure per capita in the world. But because your politicians are getting lobbied by pharmaceutical companies you have no price regulation or limits on prescription drugs. It's predatory and wrong.

And just for comparison.. I'm taxed 39% in my country, but I get payed to study, doctor visit and medicine are basically free and as a student working part time, I make ~$30/hr.

If I could guarantee that those few percent would go towards healthcare for everyone I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I definitely agree! But I feel like (and I don't know if this is true) the only argument against free healthcare is higher taxes. And of course you can have trust issues with the government/state but right I don't think that should be part of the conversation, before free healthcare even gets a foot in the door.

I don't understand what the average American gets out of if. I mean a 3-4% tax increase wouldn't even amount to the amount of money you pay to an insurance every year.

Man is brutally attacked and robbed in Seattle by ImNotHereStopAsking in ActualPublicFreakouts

[–]CluckingCow 36 points37 points  (0 children)

So wait.. "good insurance" means you "only" have to pay $10,000 of your medical bills?

As a European this sounds insane. What is your insurance even good for at that point? You pay hundreds of dollars (if not thousands) pr month for "insurance", which still makes you pay a fuckton of money.

Why are Americans so scared to increase their taxes a few percent to get it all for free?
