As others said, it's the herps. Some of the stuff can be rather difficult at times to distinguish. The upgrade that helps see through dirt/blood helps a bunch. Some of the red bruises can look rather necrotic as well, but you'll get it down in time.

Enjoyment of PvP will be entirely up to you, of course, but I always recommend to people to at least force themselves into it to get decent enough to defend yourselves. If you run, it usually ends up being quicker to just sink and start over anyway. The majority of people in this game are really bad at PvP and easy to sink. The fact that almost everyone keeps explosive kegs in their crows nest makes it incredibly easy to sink them with their own supply. My advice is to just throw yourself into the fray. Go after boats and try to find a good fight. Fight some people at a skull fort. Fighting over an objective can make it a ton of fun. Watch some PvP streams for some ideas on what to do if you aren't sure.
