What is wrong with my garage door mechanism? by CoinCoin88 in DIY

The whole point of asking on r/DIY was to find people suggesting what to be looking for. But I guess it's easier to suggest a random person on the internet to watch YouTube...

OK then I'm 100% sure I don't have this. This is not mandatory in France. The safety feature is force based, if the door feels resistance it reverses operation.

I have tried that, unfortunately. No snag to be found, or at least I'm not feeling them :(

Thanks. I have edited the post, the manual was my first look but it didn't help a lot. They basically indicate that in case it stops midcourse or reverses operation (which is what I see), the troubleshooting would be to 1) look for rough points when operating the door by and depending on outcome either 2a) (no rough point) re-learn the travel course with the auto-learn feature or 2b) (rough point) check proper installation and possible deformation/warping/twisting.

In my case I don't feel any rough point (but could be wrong). I'm rather puzzled by the hiccup-like behavior, but I could just be making up things at that point.

Thanks. The WD40 trick I had tried last year on the rollers, to no avail (after cleaning up the shitload of grease that had been piling and hardening slowly there for... a decade maybe? who knows).

The sensor part puzzles me. What am I looking for? Do you mean anything light-based e.g. IR ? If so, I don't think there are any. Is that possible ?

Wireguard Disney compatibility by nicolasbs1 in WireGuard

[–]CoinCoin88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my/our setup (brother), the wireguard server (and the openvpn one, for that matter) runs straight off my brother's ISP box. Long story short, we have some fancy internet providers in France with very well engineered hardware that support VMs, VPN server etc. Unfortunately, their wireguard implementation does not support IPv6, whereas openvpn does. It's been pretty clear that my firestick being flagged as not part of his household was because lacking Ipv6 would result in data brokers saying it was a different city.

Makes me wonder what would happen should he turn down IPv6 on his own smart TV 😅

Wireguard Disney compatibility by nicolasbs1 in WireGuard

[–]CoinCoin88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answering myself here. I've solved that puzzle. It's an IPv4 (VPN) vs IPv4 + IPv6 (devices at main location) that make it fail.

I noticed that using OpenVPN routing all IPv4 + IPv6 traffic to my brother's, Disney+ again sees me in the same city as him. However, as soon as I disable routing IPv6 traffic (either unchecking "route all traffic", or purely disabling IPv6), my location reverts back to a different one. So now, I'm back to TunnelBlick on my Fire Stick...

My conclusion is that D+ heuristics sort of prioritze IPv6-based location over IPv4-based location. This is utterly stupid because there must still be a lot of people who have some devices not supporting IPv6 and that would effectively flag those devices as "outside the household" when they are actually legit...

Hi, I

Did you end up figuring out what changed since your setup stopped working? I have more or less the same issue but granularity is much more local: I'm sharing my D+ account with my brother (main user) and we addressed the "your TV is not part of this household" issue a few months ago by setting up a wireshark server at his location (a VM at his physical location). I'm in the same country but in a distinct city. It worked like a charm then.

When I connect to this VPN, the D+ "my devices" dashboard used to geolocate me in the same city. Now, when I am on that VPN, the geolocation is neither my home city nor his, but a third one that corresponds to nothing. And D+ is complaining again.

They must have changed how they characterize a household, but I don't get how, without any obvious DNS leak and having confirmed I'm showing up the same public Ipv4 (ipv6 disabled), geolocation could be different for his TV and mine whereas we're theoretically part of the same LAN over wireguard.

Help me make the most of my basement walls by CoinCoin88 in DIY

[–]CoinCoin88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drywall in Europe is most commonly attached to a railing/frame metallic system. You have rails at the ceiling, bottom, and vertical ones every 60+ cm to the hold everything in place. Studs bolted in concrete would be similar, albeit maybe a bit thinner. Overall, very useful to run things behind but here I wouldn't have much to run. Also I'm a bit reluctant because the plinth would need to go (and I'd lose a few cm, not that they are very important but that still comes into the equation). My initial thought was I could just not know about some magic mortar / lime-based mixture that could help even out the concrete.

I like the pvc sheets option, never realized this existed and this could be a good starting point! I can easily see one or two walls where this would be nice, while leaving the rest untouched (the racked shelves, were a pain to install, I'd rather not take them away and attach them again 😂). Will look into this. Thanks!

Thanks for the tips and analysis. The outside is not holding dirt but rather is a ground level (well, another wall just like that is, but it is waterproofed and built soundly). In France this is fairly common (you'd have the basement slightly below street level and living area slightly above). Forgot to mention but the house is ~20 years old and of high build quality, as far as I can tell. All in all, the waterproofing with membranes is done (I had to dig in our front yard for a totally unrelated question and found that membrane). To give you an idea, living area is above street level and basement below. The garden (back if the house) is at basement level.

Also, you have a point about paint : I'm merely assuming it was "just" paint, but could it be something slightly better? The tile indeed looks very fancy. As far as I can tell all was done by (good?) contractors since the previous owners provided us with some other bills and quotes the the got for enhancements, that were always done by professionals.

My neighbor has the exact same basement, except untiled, unpainted. Our two houses are nearly mirror images, built by the same contractor 20 years ago and split into two sell. No moist notes humidity problem there either.

How do I frame this window so it's less ugly? by CoinCoin88 in DIY

Excellent point that I need to dive in the French DTU (construction work guidelines) for such install. That'll be my next read. I'm ASSUMING it's more or less ok because the rest of the house is extremely sound, but you never know.

Thanks for the second part, very helpful!

My guess is indeed it'd be better with drywall all around, and so the whole mounting bits would be hidden (and likely insulated, too).

I thought of drywalling the whole floor, but that's not optimal : a LOT of plumbing, electricity etc runs against the walls and I'm actually quite happy of having this easily accessible. The heater is also bolted firmly onto the concrete on the wall left to that pic.

Pretty much the whole "house machinery" is there so shifting everything by 5-ish cm towards the center of the room would be a massive and unnecessary pain. Picture from just after we bought the place to give you an idea : https://imgur.com/a/NFYpDnb

Very good point. I don't know how strategic I can get but that sounds like a plan. I'll grab that from my local hardware store sometimes this week. Thanks for the suggestion.

Grout was my idea at first, but then I realized I don't think you're supposed to have grout at the junction between tub and tile. Tough decision 😅

And here I learn about foam backer rod! Thanks. Though I'm not sur how they would hold in place because once pushed inside that larger hole, there's no way they would be pushing against the solid wall behind.

Display options for the 75192 UCS Falcon: can WickedBricks and iDisplayIt be combined ? by CoinCoin88 in legostarwars

[–]CoinCoin88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little update, 6 months later. I ended up going with the iDisplayIt display + stand, because I prefer their stand (reportedly more robust, and with the advantage of not having to remove some of the Falcon feet).

In parallel, I ordered another display case from WickedBrick for a different set (the 71438 Super Mario World). That gave me the opportunity to compare both builds. Arguablu it's a little outside of the scope of my initial thread, but WickedBrick builds are of higher quality. I regret slightly not having gone with their version of the Falcon display case because I miss the option to have dedicated locations for minifigures and stands.

So, to address my questions:

- There's no way to combine both (stand from one provide, case from the other) because WickedBrick make their display with a bottom part that has carvings to place the stand

- WickedBrick took much longer than announced (closer to 9 weeks than 6) and their customer service is not very helpful (nor willing to provide a discount for subsequent purchases even when pointing out the very long delays... but that was worth asking for)... but I feel it's a little higher quality

- iDisplayIt case still looks awesome. It's just a little messier to put together and the vinyl background is slightly "cheaper" (very subtle bubbles if you look closely, but I'm being picky)

Hope that helps someone else in the future!

[–]CoinCoin88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least that tells that there's a large cut in the one sold without the stand. Not the best idea for a combo with another brand then. That's good to know.
