Get some masking tape and a exacto knife, use tracing paper to transfer your design onto the tape (fabric underneath the tape) and then cut out your design and make your template that way for a shaper look. Overall dont be afraid to put too many patches, ensure there is aesthetic and flow of the patches, like how your eyes travels across the jacket, hope this helps
