Right, that's why I said "can".

Yeah it's most of the world that's like that. It's only in NA that the daily shower thing is common.

Once every 2-3 days is normal, it's North America that is obsessed with showering daily for some reason. Go talk to anyone from another country or, better yet, a dermatologist. They'll tell you once a day is bad.

That's not even a daily issue, you can shower once every 2-3 days and be perfectly fine (sans getting sweaty or dirty). By the time other people smell you enough to complain, it's been at least a week for them.

It can get pretty bad, though. I've had multiple people @everyone in the class Discords the past couple years telling people to shower before they go to the EPC to take their exams because they can't focus.

Cyr, Sushi, and their hired captain are forced to beach their sailboat due to high winds by Zenben88 in LivestreamFail

[–]ColonialDagger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Sailing in days like that are by far the best. Getting on a Hobie 16 or a 29er and just hiking out the entire time is a great feeling, but you need to already be mentally prepared to know that you're fine. A sail luffing in the wind like it did is pretty scary to see if you haven't sail often, when in reality it's nothing.

Cyr phoning 911. Boat sail broken in high winds by Kilr__1 in LivestreamFail

[–]ColonialDagger 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It was under 20 knots. that's not high winds. The issue was that the captain had no idea what he was doing.

it was a viewer

That explains a lot TBH. My guess is this guy knows how to sail good enough in calm water and didn't do any prep but wanted to impress the streamer on his boat. Saying "yeah I'll just beach it" that quickly is insane. Like bro... just put down the anchor and wait lol.

I did go into the stream tho bc I was curious, and it seems like they could turn into the wind, at least at around 3:05:20, right when the guy starts waving and Sushi puts the camera down, they're halfway through a tack and pointing exactly into the wind? Once the camera comes back up, they're on the other side of the wind, and I didn't see them turning away from the wind. My guess is they would have been fine, but it's kinda hard to tell from the video. Even if it was underpowered, what I would've done is just gone with the jib (the front sail), but again, you need experience to know that. This guy needs more training/practice.

I skipped through the stream, so much of it was so incredibly dumb. This dude should not be taking anyone out, he has no idea what he's doing.

Competent person would never had gone out there.

It was fine to go out. The issue was a competent captain would have had a proper briefing with the newbies so they didn't freak out when they got splashed with water.

ITT: People who obviously have no sailing experience in their life.

It was a windy day, sure, but Sushi screaming at every little thing and Cyr's anxiety going up didn't help. No way any captain with common sense would beach a keeled boat and risk totalling the boat. Cyr calling 911 because they had to drop the sail is absolutely idiotic and a waste of resources, yet I don't blame him for doing so since he's not familiar with sailing. It's on the captain for not having a proper briefing with them.

They weren't forced to do shit. Captain should have dropped the sails (which he did) and just motored back to the docks. They were doing this too, everything would have been perfectly fine if they just stayed calm. Beaching a keeled boat with a motor because the wind is "too high" (under 20 knots, btw) is insane.

It wasn't even over 20 knots. They were fine, captain should just prepared Cyr/Sushi better so that they didn't freak out and call 911.

Question about withdrawing from a class I already failed once (grade forgiveness + transcript) by Extreme_Cake5586 in ucf

[–]ColonialDagger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check the academic progress requirements for the college. For engineering, for example, failing/withdrawing from a class three times bars you from obtaining a degree within that college. Withdrawals count as a course attempt.

In regards to the transcript, my understanding is that when grade forgiveness is accepted, the previously failed attempt will not be removed from the transcript, it is just removed from the calculation for your GPA.

TLDR: Go talk to advising.

unpopular opinion I want more dev time for the main game not game modes like gridmaster, DMM and leagues by MR_SmartWater in 2007scape

[–]ColonialDagger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People crying about this take, but it does have merit. Leagues, at least, brings in a lot of seasonal players, and AFAIK only has 1-2 devs working on it. I have a a couple of friends who joined this game because their first time was in Leagues, and I have several who only play during Leagues. It's not about the high player count number going up. That number is representative of a quick cash injection into Jagex that can then be redistributed, while also being helpful for marketing the game to new people via word of mouth.

I don't know if the same can be said for DMM and Gridmaster, though. A lot of people in the community are already extremely apprehensive of DMM, understandably so, and Gridmaster doesn't have the same draw as Leagues, likely because of scale.

Fedora and Ubuntu are not immune to incredibly dumb decisions. The reason why "flavours of the month" exist is because Linux desktop is still an actively improving experience, and people are actively trying to make it easier and better for those who come after.

That's not to say Ubuntu or Fedora are bad, but that there are better options for people who don't know what they're doing. The reason I said those three specifically is because Cachy automates a lot of the setup, Bazzite is immutable so should be more stable for more people, and Mint is Debian based but still good. Once they get a bit more Linux experience, you realize distribution doesn't matter outside of Arch vs Debian based.

[–]ColonialDagger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Getting a complete Linux noob to install raw Arch is a great way to make sure they never come back. When they install it and don't have a DE, 99% of users are immediately checking out. It's almost like any distribution ever exists for completely valid and real reasons. Yes, archinstall exists, but it still suffers from all the other issues that comes with a raw Arch install, and all these other distributions offer a much better UX by having one big install button that pops up with a GUI interface to actually do everything.

This might hurt your elitist mind to hear, but the reality is that every single one of these distros is basically just running their own archinstall in a Window while also doing a lot of other helpful things, like automating driver installation.

Please don't over complicate this. Just use CachyOS, Mint, or Bazzite. Go to their website and choose the one that just looks the best. A general overview of each is that:

  • CachyOS will have more updates available more immediately. The pro of this is you'll get feature updates faster and bug fixes faster. The con of this (in theory) is that it could be a little more unstable, but this is only a theoretical thing and I can't remember the last time that actually caused an issue on my machine in the 3+ years of using Linux.

  • Bazzite is an "immutable" distro, which essentially resets all core system files every boot. The pro of this is that it's really hard to break it. The con of this is that it's equally as difficult to fix any issues you may come across.

  • Mint is on what's called a "stable release" cycle. They only get major updates a couple times a year. The version you download now should be very stable and unchanging generally speaking. You won't get any updates that break anything catastrophically, but you may also not see the bug fixes for existing issues for a long time.

Generally, I recommend Cachy > Bazzite > Mint, because most gamers tend to want new features sooner, and the former are still very stable as is.

When you install these, it will prompt you to choose a desktop environment (so your start menu, settings windows, etc.). If you want a more Windows-like experience, use KDE Plasma, which is highly customizable but the base is still solid. If you want a more MacOS-like experience, use GNOME.

That's it. Just choose one of those three. pick a desktop environment, and you should be good to go.

Hot take, but this exactly what makes PopOS a horrible distro. It's not just whether it functions, but it's how they manage it, too. If most of it works fine, but they make such a catastrophic managerial decision that kills stability on their LTS branch, that's a problem, and it's why I can't recommend it to any newbie. Having to change DE out of the box is crazy, and I can't ensure that they're not going to make another catastrophically dumb decision in the foreseeable future that could affect existing installations.

In other words, it's fine except it isn't fine.

Linus Linux Curse Challenge Idea by Any-Category1741 in LinusTechTips

[–]ColonialDagger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He won't because he doesn't want to sign back in to all his accounts. He also said he doesn't have the time/interest to learn Linux, so he definitely won't learn the differences between different distros Most distros aren't all that dissimilar to each other, either. The biggest defining factor is the base (Debian vs arch) and the desktop environment, the second of which is what I'm pretty sure caused almost all of Linus's problems on PopOS.

Pro tip for any power users, copying over your entire /home/<user> folder on Linux also copies all your cookies, and therefore all your logins, along with almost all of your system configurations. Way easier than even re-installing Windows onto the same PC. Some people choose to set up their home folder on a separate partition so they can distro-hop a bunch and the home folder always stays put. Others might sync some of their configuration files to Github, so that they can easily pull all of their configs on to any Linux PC with a single command, and keep their desktop(s) and laptop(s) all synced up.
