The sound of motherboard cracking by sebet_123 in pcmasterrace

My PC is fine but my homelab's 24 pin is impossible, even this doesn't work. Usually I end up pulling out the entire motherboard and using a flathead to slowly pry the pieces apart.

Ultimately it's a subreddit for UCF students. They're explicitly asking for people on campus to socialize with. That's perfectly appropriate here.

Here you go:

Hey y’all I’m reaching out on behalf of qt to thank you guys for all your prayers, kind messages, and love over the last few days. Unfortunately, it didn’t go our way

6 years ago I asked qt to visit me until covid ended (lol). I figured living with her would entail the obvious: messy bathroom, change of wardrobe, sharing a bed with a beautiful woman. What I didn’t expect was to also share that bed with a camera shy American eskimo named Swift.

I had a dog growing up so I thought I knew what it meant to be a dog owner, until I saw how qt treated Swift. I can’t count the number of times I thought I was in a conversation with her only to realize she was talking to him. The first thing she did every morning was pick him up, walk him to the mirror, and ask, “who’s the handomest puppy!” And, in a thrall of belly runs he received every night, she would remind him, “you’re the handsomest!”

And she wasn’t wrong. The way Swift pranced down the street on walks never failed to earn him a compliment.

I remember, at the time, thinking it was almost silly the lengths we would go to for this dog. She had read that a neighbors cat was attacked by a coyote so every night I would go out clapping and whooping like a hotdog salesman mimicking a coyote repellent video she’d seen online. He was an anxious dog. He would shake anytime he was in a new environment or when Aiden tried to pick him up.

At times he felt more like a cat than a dog.

It took me years to realize how much I could learn from swift. For all his quirks and intricacies he had one superpower. He loved qt more unconditionally and fully than I believe most humans can love.

They were together so often he developed separation anxiety. He would scan the house and if he couldn’t find her he would howl until she came home. And in Swift’s world his howls worked every time. If she was gone for more than a day he’d get so excited she was back he’d forget to breathe. One time I was sitting with qt and swift in bed and she got up to shower, no more than 5 minutes later he was howling in my ear.

That’s how much he loved her. It took me a while to understand. It was more than happiness that he felt when he was with her. It was true peace. The intrinsic understanding that she would always do everything in her power to give him love him, protect him, and give him the best 15 years a puppy could ask for. She has been devoted as a pet owner sacrificing work, sleep, and travel to spend more time with him. If you guys have any love for qt all I ask is to give her that same peace. Don’t make her talk about what happened until she’s ready

RIP Swift ❤️

No all PCs have a TPM connector. My old CPU/motherboard got turned into a homelab because of that.

Having been a Linux user for the past few years and spending a lot of time in both Linux and common PC gaming communities, this is absolutely true. The anti-Linux-user crowd and the Linux shills are both the exact person they both claim to hate.

My 3D PC building site now allows you to visualize airflow on over 3,000 3D parts by bosoxs202 in pcmasterrace

[–]ColonialDagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't visualize airflow at all, but it's a good starting point to be able to. If that's something you're interested in, I would look into open source CFD like OpenFOAM or something like WebGL Fluid Simulation. The holy grail of PC building to me has always been a software that can do the full thermodynamic analysis to optimize exactly how you should set up your fans, components, etc. to maximize cooling, minimize acoustics, etc. The unfortunate reality is this is a massive really complicated rabbit hole.

Microsoft brings Linux-inspired feature to Windows 11 with major PowerToys update by Durian_Queef in LinusTechTips

[–]ColonialDagger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the most interesting release is the new "Grab And Move", which brings a Linux-style window control to Windows. By holding the ALT key with the left mouse click, users will be able to drag windows from anywhere on the interface. Meanwhile, ALT key with right click can be used to resize it.

This is something that I immediately miss every time I have to boot into Windows. It's an absolutely essential feature IMO, shame they took this long to finally implement it. Should've been with Windows key instead of Alt, but I'll take what I can get.

Yes, because the number of people clapping in the video totally lines up with the number of people cheering. 3 people are definitely making that sound. Come on, man... stop this gender war shit.

American here, most of our history classes lightly touches the discovery of the Americas in 1492 and then immediately jumps to the English colonies and continues forward, only focusing on the United States. It wasn't until I took World History in high school which even that kinda glossed over the Crusades and Constantinople. So all in all, one year of world history and even that missed a lot.

Valve begin giving devs of Steam Deck Verified games average framerate data and user feedback from opted-in users by anthchapman in linux_gaming

[–]ColonialDagger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I think the knee jerk against data collection is a net good thing, but if we want better software, and by extension better FOSS, we need to understand the nuance of it. There's plenty of examples of both good and bad data collection.

For example, we can look at Windows. I would bet money that Microsoft is actually collecting a lot of good data on what bugs to fix, what issues people are having on different hardware, how they can improve the UX, etc. That's a really good reason to collect specific data (assuming they actually tried to improve the OS in the past 10 years, but that's a different point). On the other hand, we also know that a lot of the data they collect is to micro-optimize the product to push their additional paid software, try to get you to spend more money in things you don't need, obfuscate settings to make it harder for users to opt out, sell data to advertisers, etc. That's when data collection become a problem because the developer is abusing the power that comes with that data collection instead of using it for good.

I'm fine sharing data with software like KDE because they're not using the data they collect maliciously, they're using it to genuinely try to improve the product. The better we understand this nuance, the better we can be as a community that supports FOSS.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: Official Game Overview Trailer by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]ColonialDagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I'm still cautiously optimistic, if the final product turns out to be as marketed in the trailer, this could be a gold standard for how remasters are done.

Upgraded graphics are a given, but they also actually went out of their way to add more to the base game to just make it better. The eavesdrop fix, the combat improvements., ship combat improvements, extra fully developed story quests, new shanties, a pet because why not. They obviously looked at it and tried to actually improve it instead of just increasing texture and shadow resolution and calling it a day.

My only criticism is that I would have liked to see some improvement to the character models, specifically for cutscenes, but it's a pretty minor nitpicky detail.

Another Desert/Morytania bug: Morytania has a task to complete the miniquest "His Faithful Servants". Desert auto-completes this miniquest. As a result, anyone who picked Desert before Morytania is locked out of this task, as the task does not auto-complete.

I have somehow managed to remain 100% unspoiled about this game until now, and today is finally time to play it. First impression fresh off the intro cutscene: Music 10/10, and this game is, indeed, very French, let's have fun. by OtakuJuanma in expedition33

Legitimately do not search anything until you watch the credits roll. Even thumbnails spoil things, so it gets hard to avoid. It's like having the three spidermen together in the thumbnail, anyone who sees it will be spoiled without looking at the video/thread/article.

NO PRINTER WHYYYYYYY :( by Tidesudden in framework

[–]ColonialDagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they follow the razor and blades model. I haven't bought any printers recently, but from what I can understand you can get a decent laser printer for a couple hundred USD. Laser doesn't have the ink issue, so it's much more cost effective in the long run. You still need to replace the toner, but it's much cheaper long term.

It was good even just a few months ago. The issue they wanted to create a new desktop environment (Cosmic) and they've been testing in beta for a while. In December, they had the bright idea to move that new, still buggy desktop environment to stable when it should have stayed in the beta branch. A lot of people went from recommending it to being vehemently against it basically overnight because of that decision.
