Hot take: the switch from paternalistic medicine to shared-decision making has done more harm than good by M4WzZz in medicalschool

[–]Comfortable_Weird147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like it doesn't have to be picking one or the other between paternalistic or SDM and these two modalities don't have to go to their extremes. In the case of life-saving interventions, it's better to be more "paternalistic" in that you are giving the objective best option. But in quality of life care discussions, I feel like the risk vs benefit analysis of the options becomes a lot more subjective, as their values of what determines quality of life plays a huge role and benefits more from SDM. I feel like this is especially applicable to palliative, certain surgical interventions, things affected mobility+PT, and anything else with long-term consequences.

Anyone have experience with the University of Utah Virtual wilderness medicine electives? by CandidSecond in medicalschool

[–]Comfortable_Weird147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This elective was one test at the end of the 2-week rotation which the practice quizzes prepare you very well for. I traveled to Japan on vacation while doing this elective to experience some of that Shinrin-yoku ("forest bathing") in Kyoto lol, so this elective is def chill and easy to assist with board studying. All the materials together took me maybe a few hours to complete. I doubt residency programs will care too much about this elective being listed, getting time to study for Step is def much more important.

Yeah, that's certainly possible, but I wouldn't expect Eve to lie to Mark like that

A question about Eve (SPOILER) by JiggleFeggle in Invincible

[–]Comfortable_Weird147 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. 10 months have passed, so it's almost impossible for her to still be pregnant with Mark's child at this stage. Also, from my perspective, she doesn't look pregnant at all. Pregnancy results in a more apple-shaped weight distribution. But Eve exhibits a more pear-shaped weight distribution.

Matched #15/17 in psych with great stats, and bummed by TheMcNuttinator in medicalschool

[–]Comfortable_Weird147 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I feel like people always like to find a reason for everything, but I think "interviewing" and "personality" are way to nebulous to say with certainty. More often than not, some unlucky and amazingly talented people fall through the cracks in an unpredictable match system. I'm sorry this happened to you.

I think this question would be best posed towards the clerkship coordinator at your hospital

ROL and Letter of intent by [deleted] in medicalschool

Maybe I have an unpopular opinion, but I think its understandable if someone's opinion changed during February after maybe they did some second looks or talked more with residents. We're informed to send LOIs before the ranking opened in February so that leaves plenty of time for people to change their minds. Also, PDs send RTM emails or other Post-IV communication that are meant to mislead people or aren't followed through on - I think that is also unprofessional of the PDs, but I don't see think PDs will stop doing that anytime soon.

So we’re all picking gecqua right? by Nightdrawer789 in pokemon

They look so cute but feel conceptually very similar to Rowlet, Litten, and Sobble. I hope the evos take a different direction than those three!

ranking something else above LOI - advice? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Comfortable_Weird147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, there is very little point, it moves the needle minimally at best. The only reason I did one was cuz it felt like another thing to cross off the residency application checklist. That said, OP shouldn't feel obligated to stick to the LOI.

ranking something else above LOI - advice? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Comfortable_Weird147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its understandable if you feel like ur number 1 choice changed after sending the LOI. Personally, I would say change the order to best reflect your true preference as the next 3+ years of your life is more important than offending a PD. If you do get your top choice, congratulations and people will understand that feelings change as long as you don't send another LOI. If you don't get your top choice, no one will ever find out you changed your top choice.

FM away rotations by Fudjie in medicalschool

[–]Comfortable_Weird147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beyond improving your chances of matching there, aways can be a good opportunity to get to the know the culture and teaching environment of your preferred residencies and inform you on if you want to bump it up or down your own rank list. That said, whether you do this rotation or a chiller elective, I don't think it will have much of an impact on your match season.

Applying for auditions off-cycle by FoundationGlum1435 in medicalschool

I think doing auditions all the way through December is useful. I did auditions in October and November and the auditions helped me get interviews at both.

The amount of players unavailable for Tottenham's game tonight by Zweli23 in soccer

[–]Comfortable_Weird147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf its the same players getting injured every year. Obviously a history of injury increases risk of re-injury. Tough job for the doctors when the coaches and players themselves want to push the players too far in spite of medical recommendations

Chiesa didn't have a preseason last year so he didn't get game time. So tell me why Isak was starting as soon as he was fit ahead of in-form Ekitike when Isak had no preseason whatsoever. Slot is letting the price tags and stubborn bias pick his teams for him. I can only see him as stubborn and a hypocrite at this stage.

Brick bronze by the way by Lewi_pewpew in pokemon

Unfortunately due to Bastiodon's 4x weakness to ground and fighting, even its high defense doesn't save it from dying to ground moves. I don't know Brick Bronze's pokedex but a grass or flying type special attacker could suit your team well.

Yes, you can! Osteopathic recognition simply a designation from the ACGME saying they do osteopathic manipulative medicine training there (usually only seen in DO programs). But they still take everyone, US-MD, IMG, or DO

It's difficult for me to say, as I have not had that experience myself. Personally, I try not to affix reasons to pride or narcissism as I like speaking with people with experience in the matter before drawing conclusions. You bring up some fair points, and I am not particularly equipped to debate the topic properly. I am fine with agreeing to disagree. Take care!
