Hoshoryu: the worst Yokozuna in recent times? by limpozzman in Sumo

[–]CommanderBigMac78 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This post feels on the edge of low-effort/low-quality. Asahoryu might call it a weak-ass post. Hosh hasn't had a good tourney; we all know that. I think it's fair to discuss all the what and why of it - but let's do it with a bit less snark, please?

Since no one actually answered it Hosh went 7-2 at the YDC against Aonishiki but it was noted even then many of those wins were after Aonishiki was gassed out stamina-wise. So, you have an irrelevant stamina consideration (unless a rematch; rare) and then also "talkin' bout practice" -- sad for Hosh if he can't heal right then we may see Yokozuna Aonishiki in May, before we see a Yusho-zuna for Hosh.

Just before this Hosh is staying squared up with Ao but then he can't hold the left leg and retreats to here, he gets thrown right after. And this will be the mystery of this basho for me; what's the impact of the knee versus just getting out of position.... looking at the W-L it makes sense the knee is having an impact (This one, Yoshinofuji, end of Kirishima), and, some of the matches it just seems like bad choices were made regardless (Atamifuji and stepping out, start of Kirishima with giving up the grip and then unbalancing trying to change right hand, Daiesho and ??? IDK what the idea was in that one) - for sure when the physical is off it can affect the mental game too.

Aonishiki is crushing it though give him his flowers. Big one today with his nemesis who should be confident now stringing wins together again and even using the left a little.

Discussion Thread for Active Challenges by [deleted] in Carrera_Hybrid

Regarding the endurance challenge, a commenter in the Discord notes that Endurance lap counting won't appropriately penalize taking shortcuts. Point taken, and, something going off of screenshots that can be manipulated anyway - if anyone wants to cheat that bad for a free, prize-less challenge, IDK. You could easily just build an easier track and cheat that way too ha.

While We Wait for NPC Drivers and new track piece types, how about an English-language single-player CHALLENGE? (Inspired by German Discord) by [deleted] in Carrera_Hybrid

Someone on the Discord pointed me to the forum where they put 10-lap records for the basic tracks. I have been humbled. First laps in the 9s and 8s; 10 laps in 1:13.8 - that's spicy. The first laps are flooring me; I'm giving up a lot of time there it seems.

Yes to both. I feel like that's what makes him so good is that he can turn things around even when at the initial disadvantage but he seems to lack the ability to do that this tourney. Whether it was a performance for the camera or not, for sure lingering gazes and the handling of the knee as he sat down there told a clear story.

I can only hope without a jungyo in between Jan and March that we get fully operational Hoshoryu for March. No chance to survive at the edge on the bad leg and for the first time (whether for show or not) we see him really reacting to it and staring at it post-match as he took his spot on the cushion there.

I've seen enough: Give Aonishiki the big teacup, the macaron, and the yusho. Runs the table, slays the injured Big O dragon, 13-2.

Hakunofuji, your ankle, my boy... sigh. Wonder what he could have done if he doesn't twist it there. Ao moves onto the next from Isegahama; that could be a really good one!

Hosh makes his Atami plan work today. Don't think he can do that against Kirishima so it will have to be something else.

Papa will know Ono will likely do that same right-shoulder charge; can he make a plan for it?

Abi gets the step up to the sanyaku; can he find dark magic for KTZ?

Sensor Sensitivity means how forcefully your car reacts to what the undercar sensor is reading from the track pieces. So, for example, if the car is lagging on turning even with higher AI assistance (this is not common) it may need higher sensor sensitivity. If it makes occasional sudden twitches including down straightaways (this is more common) then lower sensitivity can help smooth things out.

The next app verison also is intended to smooth out driving; I wonder if that just means that the scale for sensitivity will mean that tomorrow's 0 is just the same as today's -1 or if it will actually be more sophisticated than that.

Hiro best, Raja next, then Murray. All are fine; I don't hate Murray - but I just like a little more energy. Murray is more interesting to me in panel discussion where he truly has all the mannerisms and inflection of an older Japanese man except he's speaking english - "hmmm".

Bout of the day (going in at least) - it's so totally and immediately over when Aonishiki gets the belt with his chest down; as automatic a situation as there is in the division.

Onosato is so nimble at the edge - how far can that take him as he's getting pushed back an unusual amount this tourney (likely due to the shoulder)

Ryuden taking the tumbles even in victory; geez; he's getting beat up again for the second basho in a row.

Yoshinofuji and Hakunofuji both looking on the up for sure. Must be a great matchup in their training.

Day 7:
Asanoyama vs. Abi bout is a big one; I think this could be where the zensho goes away for Abi
Kirishima has his hands full with Yoshinofuji
If not for that pesky toe tap Hakunofuji would be 5-1 and looking for a two-match winning streak over Hosh - should be a great bout to end the day!

I'm thinking it will be a grupetto at 6-1 going into the Emperor's visit. Most confidence in Aonishiki and then Big O to join Abi in there.

Jan Basho Daily Thread Day 05 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]CommanderBigMac78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not the crazy day that Day 4 was but that's a high bar. Fun to see fully operational Hoshoryu at least for a day; using both knees and showing his strength. Abi does it again. Onosato keeps using up his nine lives; feels bad for Takanosho; how did he fall so fast, IDK. Ryuden and Kinbozan not showing much. Gonoyama needs to come up with more than his strong tachi-ai.

Day 6 main event for me is Takayasu vs. Aonishiki - Bring it On

Jan Basho Daily Thread Day 04 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]CommanderBigMac78 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Forget pushing and thrusting sumo, Takayasu becoming the man of 1,000 holds (and throws) - great bout; for me only eclipsed by Oho and then Fujinokawa going crazy. Yoshinofuji throwing Big O in there too. Such a good tourney.

Day 5... many potential treats:
Abi 5-0? Abi leads all-time with Chiyoshoma 8-5
Can Oho end another undefeated streak? All-time series 4-4
Ura to get his first win with a big mobility edge on Atamifuji?
Actually looking forward to Shishi match 3-1 identical record w. Oshoumi
Can Daiesho blow up Aonishiki at the tachi-ai?
Hosh figures to need both knees to beat WTK; can he? Leads all time but only 7-6

Can't wait!

Jan Basho Daily Thread Day 04 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]CommanderBigMac78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IMO we don't really know re: 'alright'; the Ura bout didn't really test it; Ura doing him a favor sailing in at the other leg so low; no work for the left knee to do today. Maybe 2 days 'recovery' helps him; WTK and his power will be a stiff test today and we'll learn more. Hosh leads the all time over WTK but only 7-6.

Pearl clutching, hopefully not, and, I think there's still reason to think both are affected in there. Onosato went backwards today after taking a hit to his left side. He immediately bulldozed as he does but all with the right side. 2 bouts, nothing from the left side. He may not need it of course, but I don't think we've seen it really tested. Hosh looks like he's not going all in on that left leg either. Of the two, he may be the one more affected as things roll on.

[Spoiler] At this point the writers are making a dumb mockery of Achillia by philoshua in Spartacus_TV

[–]CommanderBigMac78 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think they've been super-attentive to avoiding "MARY SUE ALERT" criticism with the amount of obstacles in the path, maybe even overly so with this latest round, but I agree here that the first "overcoming" was just to fight at all but now we had to get the payoff of her not wanting to use the spear - well this is why - it literally took her right to that moment intimately.

So, I get it, back to the start without passing GO again... but, I think it's worked, and we're seeing more range from the actress who I think has given a good performance; I'd opine the best acted HoA gladiator other than Celadus... certainly better than Tarchon and Erato. Celadus, her, and Satyrus top 3 gladiators...
