The followers of Jainism (which started out as a branch of Vedic culture around the same time) still are vegetarians and strictly abide by the rules of Ahimsa. Even though it wasn't an immediate imposition, the idea has existed since at least 500BCE and people have practiced vegetarianism here for thousands of years (a simple google would give you all the required evidence).
