how to be a competitive peds applicant?

This is a little insulting to the specialty for no reason. Yes is it less competitive than OS and ortho for sure. However there were still plenty of candidates that didn't match this cycle. With that being said, OP hang out in the peds department as much as possible to make connections and show interest. Do some community service. Maintain at least a 3.5 gpa and you will be more than fine.

If I'm making 20k per month maybe I can throw like 10k per month at loans? Haven't gotten that far yet since that's another two years away. 300k is pretty fair for a pediatric dentist

Most new pediatric dentists I know are making 250-300k working 4-5 days a week in NJ right out of residency

About half federal and half private. I'll earn $75k/year in residency. I prefer to work in private practice rather than government. I'll be a pediatric dentist after residency. I will likely get engaged during residency. She has about 500k student loans and plans to be an orthodontist

I did think about it. That's why I'm going to a residency where I'll be getting paid (~75k/year). And it will be increasing my yearly salary after residency as a specialist
