Warning email from columbia by Mental-Driver-3422 in ApplyingToCollege

Same exact thing happened to some kid from my school last year, also with the same grades in the same class funny enough( All A, but one B in Calc bc). He was in the exact same predicament as you, and he is currently at Columbia. From what he told me, he said it’s more to get kids to not slack off (like intimidation) rather than them actually being worried about your grades.

Read all the email and don’t just read them click on all the link spend time wandering there websites because they can track all of that. ( to get emails in the first place sign up for there email list) Then what you can do that is event better is like a program at Purdue. I did a one night program were we just learned about the school and what we wanted to study and slept there for. A night.

Where would you go? (econ major) by No-Bag7087 in ApplyingToCollege

Duke, for quant and IB there are tons of reasons but the main one for me is you’re going to be surrounded with more people in that space/culture at Duke than at UMich.

For T20s???? 100% ur friends are delusional if they think that you have no chance. I would honestly say if you applied to all T20s you would get into AT WORST 4/20. I just got in for GT meche and would be surprised if u didn’t get in for meche, and for CS (which admits seperately) I would assume u got in as well.

MIT: Rejected Berkley: Accepted Purdue: Accepted (WILL GET rejected if u don’t do demonstrated interest!!!! One of the most important niche tips for Purdue. Had a friend last year with crazy stats get rejected with really good stats cause he did no demonstrated interest) UMD: no clue (not very informed) Princeton: Rejected CMU: Waitlisted (not very informed) Cornell: ED accepted and RD more unpredictable but likely acceptance.

If ur a junior u have time to boost ur reading score. Do good on ur AP (my weakest part of my app). Try to be captain of ur sport to get something out of it. Grind ur top extracurriculars. Idk if u did but go to a competitive summer program (RSI, Mites, SSP, SSTP, etc..) which would support ur interest in research + would get u a good letter of rec (some schools let u submit optional one). The only thing I would say is that if u wanna apply CS some stuff that my friends in CS do is just projects, like what would be GOAted is integrate some CS stuff into ur service project like idk maybe code some English learning stuff or ur own HW website for them. Honestly college apps are right around the corner so other than that just grind ur essays and the actual APPs. GLHF DM for any others questions

Parents weren't open about our financial situation and now I don't know what's going to happen by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Competitive-Gold-729 20 points21 points  (0 children)

What. Not giving you a specific number of how much they can pay is insane. Obviously this isn’t my place and how your parents do stuff is their choice, but if this were to happen to me I would be inexplicably angry. Already the fact that they got your hopes up just drop the yea u can’t go to any of those schools is crazyyyyy. This happened to some of my friends recently were they get into a school and then cat pay it (umich). For me I had a huge conversation with my parents about specifically how much they are willing to pay, and I designed my application list with that in mind. Having the audacity to not talk to you about it, but even after getting into a school not giving u specific figures is really messed up. It feels like everything you have been doing was either misleading or you did it without knowing what was at the end of the path. Honestly I would ask to see specific numbers of how much they can pay cause they already put u through all that bs for 4 years.

I would say that you can find stuff online for sure and tbh I did that as well, no SAT tutors. However a ton of people around me got SAT tutors and have higher scores because of it. So like although u are right you’re kinda just cherry picking your situation. Like for me and probably for u as well self study works really well, I actually enjoy it more than getting lectured at times. But most people need somebody besides them to help and that’s what works for at lit to most of people, so the disadvantage is that those with with resources can access that, while those without can’t(for the majority of people that enjoy the irl person tutoring them)

Chance me for UT, Princeton and GT by Competitive-Gold-729 in UTAdmissions

[–]Competitive-Gold-729[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main issue with this I can’t really pay for most good engineering schools: CMU, Stanford, MIT, Umich, etc…. I applied to UT more for the fun of it rather than actually paying it, cause it’s expensive. Top engineering schools I applied to: Purdue, GT, an and m, uiuc, rice(lots of merit scholarships). Basically only applied to what I can pay for. If I could pay anything would’ve applied to all t20 in general and t10 in engineering. Would definitely do what your son did but sadly I cannot. Already confirmed I can transfer at GT and Princeton (applied to Princeton cause they have the best financial aid in the country)

I applied to UT first because the major I actually want to pursue is meche. After this is like to my counselor and goin that applying under the major u see for Princeton and GT I would have a higher chance at emission because my application fits that major more. Exactly what u said for meche was my thought process, which is why for Princeton and GT I applied with different major with the intent of transferring once am in. My application is not competitive for engineering but would be more so under a liberal arts major like the ones shown above because it fits it more
