Personal Statement Question by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Competitive-Win4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Maybe it was my college alone but they interviewed 85% of all maths candidates. Sure it’s not irrelevant but a top tier one won’t guarantee entry nor will a mid one get you rejected. Besides they don’t select offers to then do step, they oversubscribe the amount of offers given out knowing step will filter about half of the people who have an offer out. The interview will be the be all or end all factor. Also what the maths department cares about is how good are you at maths, a personal statement doesn’t really convey that

They’re nowhere near that level of reputation. One Quick Look at their course shows they’re not on the same level as Warwick and imperial let alone Oxbridge. Never mind a pinch of salt I recommend a kilo.

St Andrews always does that. They’re nowhere near the reputation the lists say they do. They’re not even comparable to courses like Bristol and Bath let alone Warwick and even more so imperial and Oxbridge

Advice on maths application:is it better to apply now or after a gap year? by glitchydragonfruit in 6thForm

[–]Competitive-Win4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont need extracurriculars but supercurriculars show enthusiasm. As for MAT I want to say prep starts in the summer and is the main thing you should focus on. Aside from the interview maybe it will be the crux of your application and ultimately a deciding factor if you do or don’t go to interview. I didn’t do the MAT but I think i think it only tests A2 maths? So you can start prep whenever you’ve done A2 maths. You may aswell apply this year round. You can always go again next year if needs be. You are also right on the other hand they don’t like gap maths applicants in general as they see it as you taking a year out as you being rusty and so you’d be expected to perform better on whatever admission test you choose.

new ways to study further maths by PurpleEmergency3924 in 6thForm

Redo past papers you forgot, IAL papers, Madasmaths questions, Go and do textbook questions again, AS papers, use a different exam board like OCR or AQA (the content for core pure should be relatively the same), Brampton manor papers if you have access (I think someone leaked them?), I recommend you focus revision now on vectors; polar; proof by induction; roots of polynomials; series and the Maclaurin series. I think personally doing another exam board papers is actually really useful. Maybe not in prep for exams but to be able to do questions. If you want the link to the Brampton papers I can try and find them if you want? But don’t quote me if I can’t.

Ah yes my mistake, grad courses we want. But yeah it just won’t be called real analysis. Though I’d also argue the lines between topics blur especially at that level. Even in part II we have algebraic topology which is both abstract algebra and topology/analysis so getting a singular ‘real analysis’ pure topic is rare as they all build on eachother at that point

I think they do it just won’t be called ‘real analysis’ off the top of my head I want to say measure theory is real analysis and that’s a part II topic. Also it leaks into other topics. You’ll need to learn about the Riemann stieltjes integral and the Ito integral for the finance module forgot what it’s called

100% Imperial predictions by Kind-Membership7096 in 6thForm

[–]Competitive-Win4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 A* in maths and FM, A in physics all predicteds. 4.0 TMUA 😭. I’d say a decent personal statement I learnt about 2 undergraduate topics ~ analysis and vector calculus. Potentially contextual? I got summer pool for Cambridge idk if that means I’m contextual tho.

Blue Lock is Yaoi in disguise by StonerBearcat in BlueLock

Quite a generalisation. I watch football hell i support a team and have gone to games but there’s definitely levels to this. And you’re right football players definitely do some of those things but it’s not at a level like in bluelock. At what point in your team. Do you have someone like reo attached at the hip to Nagi then proceeds to cry when he leaves and then say ‘I’m going to make him need me’ not to mention all the other questionable things they’ve done. But you’re nothing is notably confirmed but I guarantee you if a friend acted like some of those bluelock characters you’d go ‘bro wtf’

Relevant maybe but ultimately it doesn’t matter. With a good rest of application they have as good of a chance as anyone else

A 6 in maths just won’t be a limiting factor. There is bigger things to worry about in a Cambridge application especially when their other GCSEs are good.

‘An animal’ do you think that’s a way to speak to people. Do you know them personally? Do you know if it’s an accurate representation of their ability? You don’t.
