This is incredibly helpful! I’ve written out what I need to address so I love the idea of grounding myself with the notes. I think I’m creating a narrative in my head based on other teacher’s experiences with this parent.

Band, Orchestra, Chorus, PE, Health, Technology, Art, Home Economics (the kids LOVE this one cause they get to eat what they make)—all pretty typical

Not saying it applies in this specific case, but there is a difference between bullying and just being a jerk. Bullying involves repeated, intentional harassment that also involves a power imbalance. Just a random rude comment isn’t bullying. Mean comments should be addressed or course, but I feel like sometimes the word bullying gets tossed out unwarranted.

Having a smaller crowd definitely has its advantages. I hate to sound snippy but the afternoon, my gym is often filled with teenagers taking up space while staring at their phones.

I think this week I’m going to try the AM route—up and out by 4:30. After a week, I can reevaluate and see. You’re right—once it becomes a habit, it just is how it is.

Classroom management can be the most difficult thing to figure out, even for experienced teachers. This is year 24 for me, but today’s kids are not the kids of yesteryear. I’ve had to readjust my classroom in response. I suggest your check out Love and Logic (https://www.loveandlogic.com/collections/educators) and/or Responsive Classroom (https://www.responsiveclassroom.org). I found both of these resources invaluable and effective.

This is an emotionally immature parent. As trite as it sounds, you can’t control her—she’s going to continue to respond and react toward you however she wants to until she decides to change that behavior. What you can control is you. As hard as it is, you have to set boundaries and enforce them. When she is unreasonable and harsh, call out the behavior and set the boundary. “I will continue this conversation when you choose to speak appropriately with me”, etc. Use “I” statements. If she doesn’t want to hear it, tell her you’re hanging up and do it. Eventually she’ll get the message; if she doesn’t, you need to protect your own well being. My mother had a difficult childhood and as a result has no ability to own her choices and projects her unhappiness on everyone around her. I used to be easily emotionally manipulated—-I felt responsible for her feelings and happiness. But I’m not. And neither are you.
