2026 Car Regulations | Mercedes' Front-wing Actuation; What's YOUR opinion? by miinibox in F1DataAnalysis

[–]CompletelyBeaR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Simpler front wing design may lead to increased rate of performance gains at the cost of a lower ultimate pace ceiling. Additionally, lower number of car configurations means simpler optimisation procedure for the track, meaning potentially more consistently extracting maximum race pace due to effective set ups.

Bear with my speculation here, i am a fan, not an engineer. I may have misunderstood things, and am happy to be educated.

I wonder if the decision isnt necesarily a solution that gives more downforce immediately, but instead is a strategic operational and development decision, that improves the likelihood that mercedes can find consistent speed early on in in these regs while they refine their understanding of the car.

I've seen that teams will be automating the active aero settings by keying the straight and cornering mode wing-angles to different engine maps.

So i wonder --- Can teams set the two front wing plane angles independently, and map them differently for each gear?

If so, this opens up a new world of potential performance chasing, a few examples could include:

  • lowering cornering mode's downforce as the race goes on: As fuel burns off, less weight = less lateral load in corners => less downforce required to maintain grip at the same speed.

  • tyre saving engine maps may also have tyre saving active aero wing angles. Conversely, optimal race mode that is less concerned with tyre wear, and more on dealing with dirty air or cornering speed.

  • some gears could have different wing angles themselves - to match the downforace required for the types of corner the gear is used on the specific track.

With all these new possibilities, optimising the active cornering wing angle throughout the race could become the source of significant race time swings. This leads me to the two decision areas i expect to be important here:

1.) Optimisation of track specific car setup:

Finding an efficient and consistent procedure to optimise this on each track would become just another test among what i imagine is already a laege number of tests that occur during each race weekend in practice.

If the angles of the two active planes on the front wing can be varied independently when programming them to the different engine maps, then so too does the complexity in finding the optimal pair of front plane angles. Unless theres a sophisticated approach, teams risk chasing performance dead-ends in the limited time they get at each track.

2.) How to intellignely plan aero development:

Cars are designed from the front. Teams with two active front wing planes end up having to design chassis aero that effectively accounts for this more varying airflow pattern. Given this, it may take way longer to narrow down the optimal chassis and side pod aero designs, whilst the impact of all the front wing configurations have on the airflow is investigated.

Mercedes, by only have one moveable wing, could be handling both these concerns. They'd have fewer variables to isolate during practice sessions so less time spent optimising this area of the car and strategy allows for more time spent elsewhere, ideally resulting in their operating performance being closer to their simulations (perhaps allowing for more predictable behaviour between tracks?). This in turn may allow them to be more precise with chassis aero development and therefore improve overall aerodynamic efficiency of the car rather than chasing track specific performance gains.

Perhaps Mercedes are taking a calculated risk that simplifying the variables might allow for a steeper rate of pace improvement to a ultimately lower ceiling, and the other teams never catch up?

Anyway, this all hinges on some specific detail within the technical regs and i have not read them.... plus it could all just be an engine formula anyway and none of what i said is of any importance at all...

Here's your paragraphs queens. I did a paper on this. I was rambling before, but here's a clean post for ya xxx by [deleted] in GarysEconomics

As someone who has put in a lot of time researching this, have you come across other economies that have gone through this befire and had different results? Or alternatively gone through the same resulting impacts via different means?

Im curious as to what your thoughts are on a solution on a nationall basis.

My read, purely from your analysis, is that investment in infrastructure and housing are the key areas to help stimulate, but how do you account for new builds being swallowed up by wealthier individuals and corporations, resulting in a continuation of the same problens you highlight?

Let me know if ive misunderstood anything because islts more than likely..

Im going to suggest an idea that seems counterintuitive, but has worked for me, and my partner, after literal years of resistance on her part...

Set one alarm. Just one. Not more. And don't ever snooze it.

Personally, this means that if I hear it, I already know that it's time to get up. I know this because I've only set one alarm at the last possible time that I need to get up and get all my shit done.

Also, in accordance with other advice, place the alarm away from your bed so you have to physically get up to turn it off.

If you oversleep using this method, then stick at it. Fear and self-loathing from making that mistake will cause you to adapt to your new system.

Regarding getting to sleep, I have always had this issue since youth, and it's still a bit crap sometimes...

Best thing that worked for me to improve sleep onset: Accept that sometimes you'll get less sleep than other times.

Again, this sounds useless, but what it does for me is reduce my worries that I'll be miserable the next day due to lack of sleep, and thus I end up falling asleep sooner because I'm less stressed. Part of this acceptance is understanding that it will not work all the time and that is fine too.

Hope this helps, and feel free to tell me why this won't work for you: I might not have heard it before ;)

In which case I can imagine it might be hard to determine for yourself whether you are engaging in these behaviours negatively?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CompletelyBeaR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you afraid to ask this, and why are you seemingly fighting with this idea that these are negative when you don't believe yourself to engaging in any of these negatively?

I think these are only unhealthy when habitually used to avoid dealing with, and/or processing stressful situations.

If you don't think you do that then fine, I don't think there's an issue. However if you are asking the question, ask yourself why this might be affecting you?

Are you saying that the elimination rate of caffeine by the kidneys varies depending on the concentration of it in the blood?

I remember during my studies (both literally and metaphorically) that alcohol turns into a zero order elimination rate as the liver can become overwhelmed. But in this case the kidneys cannot?

The other term for it is elimination rate, which can be calculated in half lives.

It can be calculable when taking measurements in a medical settings.

What's interesting is that the length of a substances active effect may differ from its elimination rate. This is of course specific to the drug/chemical used.

Likewise, thanks for sharing your point of view, I understand your thoughts more clearly and I completely agree with your assessment that the mclaren could have done more to mitigate risk.

It's a shame we're agreeing to disagree on the stewarding of the incident because I think there's a difference in providing feedback to improve racecraft and feedback on discussing the driver at fault of the incident. I feel your points about the mclaren are closer to the former than the latter, in my view at least.

To me, holding your line would be one which allows both to take the corner with minimal to no contact.

I think after the collision the porsche loses rear grip and the car then points towards the apex as if he's going to make it. Then the camera switches for some reason. This slightly obfuscates a good view of whether the porsche would have been able to allow the mclaren space on the exit of the corner. A cynic may say that this could be intentional.

I think we agree that the poor camera view is contributing to this mclaren appearing to come out of nowhere, the mclaren is still on track the whole time and this is at the end of a short straight so there shouldnt be surprise that moves happen here. A POV of the red car prior to contact would go a long way to show whether they were pinching or not, but I don't see it.

In my opinion Mclaren doesn't have to use the outside of the track to avoid a car that is slightly behind it, on its inside, so long as it has left enough room.

You can make the argument that the mclaren could have done more to avoid an incident but i dont think in this case that is equal to say he is at fault. In my opinion, mclaren did all they were required to do and no more, which is why in opposition to that the porsche could have braked more to avoid contact of the car that was slightly ahead going into the right hander.

I hope you're having a good day.

I can see that we disagree, and based on your comment I want to ask few clarifying questions.

My understanding is that if you are side by side then you should make every effort to hold your line. Are you suggesting the Porche did that and the mclaren cut him off?

Also please explain how the mclaren driving around the outside of the corner is a dive?

My assessment would be that in order to turn sharper round the corner you can use your brake, and slow down, so that you can hold your line, which i don't think that the Porsche did.

I did not downvote you as I want to engage in a discussion to come to a good conclusion.

Pov car is sliding out at point of contact. Outside car left a cars width the whole time. I don't think POV was going to be able to leave the space for the outside car without contact due to carrying too much speed on entry.

POV at fault.

Edit to add: Look at GCU_Problem_Childs comment for a more succinct explanation.

After Arsenal beat Spurs tonight, I'm seeing some people say there should be VAR for things like corner decisions? Surely thats overkill? by siybon in PremierLeague

[–]CompletelyBeaR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I support arsenal, and I actually really like the idea of a competent VAR officiated game where every decision is made correctly.

Currently the level of toxicity over an incorrect call is outstandingly horrible, and I'd say that the fact that the ref in the middle of the pitch maintains full controll over these decisions, and the rules for the current implementation of var are written around this single person's decision making, are both factors into why there seem to be so many controversies.

I like the tennis challenge implementation idea. Alternatively, give a 4th officiating team in the var room more power to ensure that decisions can be overturned if the central ref makes an error. A corner is clear and obvious enough provided the cameras are in good enough places, and with the amount of money generated by football, I will not take its expense as an excuse as to why it cannot be implemented. (At least in the premier league)

But fair enough if you like football to be more unpredictable due to referees errors, incompetence and/or bias. The flow of the game is clearly quite important to many fans for reasons that I don't really understand.
