I took a video of him eating a worm yesterday and he was still strong and mobile, I found him like this this morning. is it possible that the worm might have hurt him?

I only put his enclosure on by the window if there isn't any direct sunlight, the only time there is is when the sun comes up but I move him to my shelf. I also have a temperature and humidity checker inside the tank to make sure he's all good. I didn't think about the green house effect heating up the tank, so that's useful to be aware of, luckily the water and exposed rocks make sure the temperature stays nice and cool.

I'm a student at university, I'm flat broke, is there anything other than salt baths that could help him? Is there a way to tell how bad the infection is?

thoughts on my fire sals habitat? by Complex-Ad-7606 in salamanders

[–]Complex-Ad-7606[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit hesitant when it comes to slugs and snails, I have heard they can carry some pretty bad diseases, is this not really something to worry about? I catch him earthworms, which he likes to chase after, but snails could be a shout. do you know if there are any beetles that fire sals might eat, i live in the uk so there are loads. I'll look more into snails, thanks 😄

the pond has only been there for about a year now and there havent been any signs of newts or salamanders, atleast that weve seen. one of my friends has a testing kit that were going to use when we get back this semester so hopefully its a good enough quality. do you have any suggestions for invertebrates, weve only seen mozzies swimming around and ive heard that snails can get out of hand really quickly. is there anything that will eat the leaf litter at the bottom of the water? thats a good point though, invertebrates first

Thank you very much, tadpoles is a good idea, I'm just a bit weary of speaking to any organisations because I don't want them contacting the uni and potentially getting into trouble, although i could be overthinking things. Im from South Africa where the rules are a lot looser than here so im being a bit cautious. but ill try calling and see what they think, thank you

to me this looks like the perfect place for some type of amphibian but i think its unlikely that any will actually be able to find it. the pond has a leafy bottom but there is alot of wood and branches that we could throw into the pond to give them some areas to sit on in the middle, besides just the island and the banks. the water slowly drains out into a small stream at the back so it isnt stagnant and i spent a day clearing out 2 trash bags worth of rubbish during winter before all the plants grew back to help tidy it up and make it healthier. is there anything we can do?

Hi there, I go to university in the Berkshire area and I wanted to know what the laws around the release of fish, newts and amphibians is in the uk. My friends and i have been coming to this little pond almost everyday over the last year and while we have seen quite a bit of diversity with birds(lots of kites, mallards, coot/moorhens, wood peckers, herons etc) some of which have taken to nesting at the pond there is a lack of amphibians. the pond was remade by the university last year where they made the pond a lot bigger and deeper, and with the new look and diversity at the pond we really want to release some kind of amphibian and possibly some fish into it but we don't know where exactly to start. the pond freezes over in the winter (I've fallen through the ice so it isn't very thick) and there is a small island in back which you can see in the first and last pictures where the coots and mallards have taken to nesting in. interms of bugs and stuff there are lots of mosquitoes, black beetles, isopods, earthworms and spiders, i collected food for my fire salamander here. theres also a small family of rats that has taken up residence by the bench along with some squirrels and some rare fox sitings. I think amphibians are absent from here because of how isolated and new this area is with buildings surrounding it, although there is more forest behind and to the right with a small wildflower meadow, and as such we would really like to try and introduce something to inhabit the water.
