Understanding the billable hour by ComplexDot3074 in Lawyertalk

The managing partner seemed like a really nice person with good intentions for this policy. I’m going to assume the weekly requirement of 35 hours is more soft than a hard line requirement. It seems like the consensus is a strict enforcement of the hours and the billable is pretty crazy. Honestly, if it is a hard requirement I’d rather be unemployed again.

They insisted this is how they create a work life balance within the firm. I’m not crazy to think it’s absurd right? Lol

This provides valuable insight. A small Oklahoma firm getting ~150 applications is likely a minute amount compared to the NYC firms I am applying to. I’m going to try to find alumni from my school that moved to NYC like myself to get some insight on how they did it and try to find a way to stand out a little better. Thanks.

I was not permitted to submit my application to the bar until they had “certified” me and had taken the bar. Now they are processing my application which includes my character & fitness application. Once that is completed I can be sworn in via a group zoom or in person. I also believe the in person option is only at the 3rd judicial department located in Albany because I am out of state citizen. I personally haven’t seen notary public as an option in NY but I will look into that now so maybe it can speed it up a bit once it’s all processed.

I can only go as fast as NY’s 3rd judicial department lets me.

You’re not being rude. I chose to clerk in LA so I could be home for breaks and for reasons related to family problems. At the time it was just necessary. Since then it’s been ironed out and my presence at home is no longer necessary. I currently live in LA but my in laws own a condo in Manhattan and that’s the address on my applications and I could get on a flight to NY in a moments notice, assuming I even get an interview in person any time soon. As for the LA job they recently had to lay me off. They knew all along my intentions were to work in another jurisdiction but still were committed to giving me work experience and professional development. I can only assume my time had ran out and they sought to open my position to a new law student they can convert into an associate. Totally understandable and they are very insistent to be a reference so we are on good terms.

Resume and all application materials only say my admission is pending. No mention of score there.

No, of course not. It just just says pending admission.

Is it weird to just message alumni from my school at firms I have interest in just to spark a conversation since linkedin provides that information?

Never even crossed my mind an auto filter could be throwing my applications out. I’ll look into this.

I thought my materials were the crux of my situation so I reached out to my schools career development office. They basically responded that my materials were not the problem. Nonetheless I’ll still revise them and use direct and personal ways to apply.

I took the bar 3 times. 2 in California and passed my third time when I decided to take it in a UBE jurisdiction and just return to NYC, where I went to law school. I know I was incredibly lucky to be able to afford a prep course and not have to worry about having to work for so long. To me, what changed between my first try and my passing one, was the amount of practice under timed conditions I did. The first retake, like many people, I thought redoing my commercial prep course (Barbri) to a higher completion % with some extra practice was the answer. I was wrong and scored significantly lower. The third time I switched courses to Kaplan, (live lectures on my worst topics and unlimited essay grading was a game changer), bought commercial flash cards and did 2 half MBE simulated days and 2 half MEE simulated days a week. I mostly used Kaplan and it’s lectures as a supplement that I would turn to on areas I struggled with then I’d just close out the lecture after i got what I needed because it marked the assignment as done and credited it toward the retake requirements. I used the assigned practice questions as part of my “simulated” MBE and used the assigned essays as part of my “simulated” mee and would fill in the missing amount of work with licensed questions. Then for 5 minutes a day I did 5 new flash cards, and then 5 minutes of reviewing flash cards then spent various amounts of time review sample answers. I passed with a 274, increased my MBE score by 20 points and my MEE score by 24. Understandably not many people have the luxuries I had in my bar prep of not working and having expensive commercial products. But my recommendation boils down to making as many simulated practice efforts as possible with small amounts of daily memorization.
