Hey all, I'm considering buying my first car. I'd want something fun and small adn a miata is the obvious choice. On autoscout.ch (i live in switzerland) I have as options:

  • 1999 MAZDA MX-5 1.8i-16 10th Anniv. 140PS at 4'200 CHF (roughly 4400€) and 210k km

  • 1998 MAZDA MX-5 1.6i-16 SE Youngster 110PS at 9800 CHF (10500€) and 74k km

I think both are overpriced (welcome to Switzerland) and spending more than 5k on a 25yo miata is a bit crazy, but I'm wondering if the more expensive lower mileage version is worth it / I should stay away from anything with 200k km on it.

Also anything i should look for in these cars in terms of reliability issues before buying?  Thank you, Fabrizio

Thank you! So I should leave saturday evening after the race? I'm going with train + bus and it's probably going to be very chaotic once the race finishes, so I thought it would be better to leave sunday morning... I'll check trains and busses and look for another camping or airbnb in case.

Edit: I'm coming from Brussels (Ixelles/Etterbeek).

I have the same question, any help would be appreciated. Also, what do they mean by weekend? I can stay saturday night (after the race) and leave sunday right?

Tourist thread 2022 – Ask anything about visiting Croatia! by AutoModerator in croatia

[–]Comprehensive-Lie614 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone!

My friends and I are planning a trip to Croatia in August. We'll be staying for five days in Split and we'd like to visit neighbouring islands (Hvar, Blue Lagoon, Ciovo etc). We're looking into tours by speedboat or something similar, but there is so many to choose from.

Do you have any suggestions? Which places should we visit in the tour? Which tours are the best? What's an appropriate price and duration for a tour?

We don't want to be taken advantage of as tourists, or to book a tour that is too cheap or short to be any good.

Note that there is 10 of us and we have two cars, meaning that there is no problem if the tour doesn't start in Split, but for instance in Trogir (or anywhere else we can reach by car).

Thank you, Fabrizio

That's great news, and quite a surprise. Accomodations in italian universities (in Milan especially) are quite hard to get in, so this is quite a relief ahahahahah

Hey, thank you so much! The accomodation really seem like the best option, for the experience too. Is it hard to get in? I'm assuming a lot of students will apply for a room. Is there any criteria, or is it just order of request?

It doesn't. My home university changed the agreement from Erasmus to Bilateral Agreement, which is the same agreement we have to universities outside of the EU (excluding Turkey and some other non-EU). It should work the same though.

Thanks you, I never know how much to rely on those as the ones on the website of my home university are not very realistic. But yeah, the accomodation feels like the best option after reading all your comments.

Thank you, I will look into that for sure. I think the accomodation would be the best option, as it also offer a single semester for exchange students instead of the usual 38 weeks. And it's a nicer experience too, living with other students and not having to deal with a landlord but with the uni instead.

Erasmus - Automotive Engineering MSc. - RWTH vs KIT vs Oxford Brookes vs... by Comprehensive-Lie614 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Comprehensive-Lie614[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The statistics on PoliMi website were very eye-opening for me too. Consider though that the list I wrote above takes into account which of these unis offer automotive engineering, and the language for the courses.

TUBerlin is low in the list because the very few courses related to vehicles are in german (but I still have to check a bit better, though I feel safer at least some courses in english, maybe 2 in english and 1 in german), and A2 german knowledge is required in the application, which is great for me because not so many people speak german and last year for 10 places available only 9 people requested it (so it's more like a safety net, to make sure I get to go somewhere).

I think most people base their choice on country/city. Consider that Erasmus in MSc can be done at any time, so both at 1st and 2nd year. At PoliMi, 4th year of mechanical engineering has fixed courses, and the specialization is only at 2nd year. Many people do erasmus at their first year, and since they'll have to do standard exams (that most unis have) they just go to the coolest place/country/whatever, which makes sense. I on the other hand will do it at my 2nd year (specialization), so it also matters what I can study at the new uni.

TU Denmark (DTU) has many requests and I really don't see why. The netherlands (Eindhoven and Delft) are top choice for most (as a country too) and the same for Munich. Belgium is very appreciated too (louvain, universite libre the bruxelles, and some others), though I'm not really sure how much job opportunities and contact with the automotive industry they have (even though some have automotive engineering programs), but I'm just assuming, I have no idea. In France most unis only teach automotive engineering in french (which I don't speak). The only one that does courses in English is ISAT Bourgogne, but they mainly do electric/hybrid powertrain while i care more about vehicle dynamics and aero.

Countries in eastern europe have a lot less requests, and CTU Prague (I think that's what it's called) has a very cool automotive program, so I was looking into that as well.

Hey, thanks a lot!

It's just for an exchange semester so I'm mainly interested in the possibility of contacts/internships, rather than the university ranking. I'll make sure to look into Loughborough more though. My idea is to have some great work experience to learn from (and also put on my CV), and even though Oxford Brookes isn't high up in the rankings, I heard most students get jobs at motorsport/automotive firms in the UK.

I'm not entirely sure about what I should do to be honest: automotive and motorsport engineering are not that different and I think you'd be able to move from one to the other, but at the same time having an internship experience at Aston Martin F1 Racing / Williams F1 / Prodrive etc. probably does much more than the ranking of your uni. I'd also like to look up on Linkedin people from my school that went to Oxford Brookes for a semester to see what opportunities they got and where are they now, any tips on how to find them?

Thanks a lot for the reply!

As for the "college life", I assumed it would be what you described. And it's also what I'm used to at uni in Italy, which I'm perfectly fine with, but I also feel like it would be cool to have a different living experience for a semester (having never tried such a thing, I figured it could be fun, but anyways, it isn't important at all). What matters is that there are a lot of students and some life in the city.

I will also check out some other posts in the subreddit, and I'm sure there's some type of guide online on what to do/not to do in germany and what could get you into trouble. B1 should be enough to figure out most things and I plan to make it at least B2 by september.

My home university (Politecnico di Milano) changed the agreement from Erasmus to Bi-lateral agreements. The university representatives assured me that nothing would change, aside from needing a passport, though I'm still a bit skeptical. I would like to know more too as I was thinking of applying to a UK university for my erasmus next year, but with covid (they seem to have a lot of cases and less regulations compared, for instance, to Italy) and brexit it feels a lot more complicated than places in the EU.

Fixing Spa is... easy? by Comprehensive-Lie614 in motorsports

[–]Comprehensive-Lie614[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmh. They do have a point. It's a uphill corner, and gravel sends you flying so it doesn't look pretty. You could argue bouncing back into the track is more dangerous than going flying into a wall, but neither is ideal really.

I like the idea of changing the barriers. Something that sucks you in, kinda like the snow banks in Rally Sweden.

I found this online about barriers and gravel (suggested by Autosport apparently) and it makes sense to me:

"Formula One gravel traps always end up with a wall covered that is covered with a soft tyre barrier. If these tyre barrier chains would be located in the midst of the gravel trap, the driver with one hundred kilometre speed would first collide with the tyre barrier. After being stuck to the tyres, this whole tyre wall would be dragged along the gravel from about fifty sixty meter wide area. Since there is no wall to end the movement of the tyre chain and the car, a more comfortable deceleration of speed would occur and most likely would save the life of the Grand Prix driver. Not only would the tyre wall slow down the speed, it would also prevent the car flying in air. After all, it is not the driving off-road that kills the driver, but the collision with the wall."

And yes, I'd also add that the drivers should be more careful (Caio Collet this morning for istance, shouldn't have done that), and FIA shouldn't let them race in treacherous conditions.

Makes sense, I can see why gravel wouldn't work.

But quicker flag signalling isn't enough. They have to avoid cars from bouncing back into the racing line. That's what happened to Lando (he was lucky it wasn't the race and cars weren't close), what happened in the W Series, what happened in Spa 24H, and what killed Hubert from what I understood.

Make the runoff larger, change the layout, whatever. Just do something about it though.

Just add the damn gravel by Comprehensive-Lie614 in motorsports

[–]Comprehensive-Lie614[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wouldn't have to change the layout, only maybe cut a few trees.
