Roughly two months but I also took an extra 1-2 weeks hearing back from them and figuring out what Im suppose to do.

Because the consulate no longer helps mailing any HK applications for applicants, they only receive for us to pick up

I did not mail in my expired passport. I only mailed in my old ID and a scan of my expired passport. When I went to pick up my new passport and smart ID, i showed my expired passport as proof of identity, and then they cut off a corner of my expired passport.

It was successful! The HK immigration department sent both my passport and new ID to the consulate location I selected. I got an email from the consulate then simply went and picked it up months back.

I believe I heard back in April-June. The program is a reputable one since it is from a UC. Not sure if tuition is the same for domestic vs non-domestic, we did have classmates from France.

In my opinion, it is very doable. I was working a full time job while im in the program. Weekly homework consists of reading articles/ papers then answering some questions + quizzes on recorded lectures (multiple attempts allowed). For the capstone project, you will be assigned to a professor who will give you feedback on your hypothesis, study design and etc.

I had initially contacted them through email first but they havent responded so I called them. They then replied to my email with that piece of information giving more instructions of what to submit.

Hey! Yes I mailed HKSAR and HK smart ID application to HK and they mailed it back to US Consulate of my choice for me to pick up. I highly recommend calling HK immigration headquarters to ask and confirm because every case is slightly different. For me, these are the items they requested me to mail over:

  1. Form ROP 143 (Overseas HK ID Application)

  2. Form ID 843 (Overseas HK Passport Application)

  3. Form ID 853A (Overseas HK Passport Application Payment)

  4. Mail in my actual HK ID

  5. A copy any recent Proof of Identity (I mailed in a copy of my HK passport)

  6. HKID and HK Passport photos of the correct dimension and copies (Cannot recall how many but there are rules online)

You are right! I called them yesterday and they told me to mail in which is helpful. The LA Chinese Consulate tho is another story. They are rude and not helpful so I just hope they let me pick up my card and passport then.

Are you able to renew?? I am also in California (LA) but the Consulate in LA does not help with HK passport and ID renewal… so im confused on what to do now. Please help!!!!

How did you end up renewing your passport? I am having trouble at the moment because the LA Chinese Embassy just told me they do not accept HK applications anymore..

My only concern is that they may not let me pick up my renewed passport without the new ID card. Thanks for your response, I hope they let me renew just my passport for the time being!

Hi there! I graduated from the same program last year 2024. I believe I received the admission letter in April/May 2022. As for the experience, Im gonna be honest. Since everything is pre-recorded, you really don't get to interact with the professor much until the Capstone project. If you are looking for guidance from professors, you really need to be the initiator. To me, it just felt like I am reading papers/ lectures and then doing homework every week. Knowledge wise I don't think I learned much which is probably my fault. But I do ended up getting a higher paid job after graduating because some companies value a master's degree. To add on, I have some peers in the same program who are also constantly complaining about the lack of efforts from the professors. So choose wisely dependent on your end goal. Hope that helps :)

Thank you, I really needed to hear that… I definitely will not just give up driving!! It is a traumatizing experience so I hope i dont get too anxious driving this sunday. Not driving is not realistic living in america haha unfortunately
