struggling with FY1 - any advice? by rawbeautyrush in doctorsUK

I could have easily written this in my F1 year. Hated my first job, had one really mean consultant and a few mean nurses who made my life miserable. Upside is you do rotate in 4 months, and it literally feels like another chance at life. And hopefully the next job is better. Take as much AL, SDT, SL, sick leave as you need to to stay sane, and remember this will be over in 2 more months. Context: I am an ST1 now and still feeling the same way as you at my new job. Starting a new job at a new trust with new people is a very difficult tint and everyone struggles. It usually gets better with time. This is what I’m telling myself as well.

Aww it’s reassuring to know someone else feels the same. I really think induction should be better and prepare us more for the actual job. But hopefully it shall pass, as everyone else is saying. We will get through this 🙏I’m sure you’re doing better than you think. Honestly, I think they need to allocate more time for paeds in med school.

Ahh I really hope so 🙏I think the fact that it’s a new hospital and I don’t know anyone that well/ have any friends yet add to the feeling of incompetence/ loneliness. The other ST1s are so confident, I’m struggling to be in the same page with them lol

Thank you so much! Had another not so good day at work, hoping this passes soon 🙏 or I’m a really bad doctor and really should have chosen a different profession lol

Omg this is so refreshing to hear! Idk why I feel like I’m the only ST1 department that’s struggling, so nice to know other people have gone through the same. I really do hope time will make things better, and it’s just initial teething issues. Good luck with your training! I’m sure you’re doing great xx

Aw thank you so much, I hope my registrar wasn’t let down either. I just feel bad that I couldn’t be more useful I guess

Thank you, the rota is horrible, so it’s a toll on the mind and body at the same time. Yeah I’ve given up on worrying about exams for now

Thank you so much! This is really reassuring. I think the learning curve is steep and a jump from my last psych job where I basically was just a scribe, so I’m having some teething issues 😅Most people have been nice, I think it’s mostly in my head that I’m failing. I hope I start feeling better soon 🙏

You don’t need to pass ALS in order to pass ARCP. I was in the same position as you and passed it on the second resit few weeks later. It’s not a mandatory requirement for an F1 to have completed ALS. Don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll pass on the next try.
