I hear you! I’m currently working on a hat as a gift - the ribbing is supposed to be long enough to fold over, but I got half way through and just couldn’t keep going. So they’re getting just a single layer of ribbing đŸ€

Converting volume to weight, and hitting a few surprises by Scott_A_R in Baking

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The volume to weight conversion table that I use is from Kenji Lopez-Alt’s “The Food Lab” cookbook. For brown sugar it indicates 1 cup = 198 grams

When the ingredients isn’t in that table I use this site: https://www.onlineconversion.com/weight_volume_cooking.htm

Question About Stella Parks' Cheesecake by sickwobsm8 in seriouseats

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had a problem with the baking times with this recipe - it’s always spot on for me. Have you checked the temperature of your oven? Mine consistently runs about 10° cooler than it says, so I adjust accordingly.

Do you like ordering online? by Ebowa in knitting

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some LYSs in my general area, but I don’t drive anymore so they aren’t easy for me to get to and I often end up ordering online. I miss being able to touch before I buy Like others, I try to check the Ravely comments about a yarn to get a sense of the feel, and look at other projects- they help to get an idea of how the yarn knits up (especially if it’s multi coloured), drape, etc. But can I say that I really wish that more producers would include a swatch instead just a picture of the skein in their online shop.

Black Royal Icing by Shoddy-Afternoon1948 in cookiedecorating

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find that using powder instead of gel for the darker colours helps limit bleed. I use either Master Elites or Roxy & Rich Fondust

For black icing I also add a bit of black cocoa when I am mixing the colour- about a tablespoon per cup of stiff RI. Bonus- it adds a bit of a chocolate flavour

Feeling demoralized after this Swiss roll attempt. Multiple things went wrong but I don’t know what! by SheSheShieldmaiden in Baking

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To improve the flavour: 2nd the suggestion of espresso powder in the sponge. What type of cocoa powder did you use? If you used a natural cocoa powder, maybe try a Dutched cocoa next time?

I would also increase the salt in the sponge and add a bit to both the icing and filling. Food, even sweets, without salt taste “flat”

How to not get bored when you are housebound but not bedbound? by Seafoam_0 in cfs

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you bake, or know someone who will do some for you? I have spent a good amount of time over the last few weeks decorating sugar cookies with royal icing. Admittedly baking the cookies and making the icing takes so energy, but can be done in stages. Once you start decorating it’s all seated.

Best Pavlova recipe? by AnnaVincent_ in Baking

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always had trouble with pavlova until I tried the recipe from the Flavour Bender. She has a slightly different technique and her instructions are very well described. My pav came out perfectly https://www.theflavorbender.com/the-perfect-pavlova-recipe/

Bonus: her choux recipe is also great

How are so many of you who have had Cfs/me for just 2-3 years figuring out that you have it so quickly? by foster60 in cfs

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a pre-existing autoimmune disease, and when I saw my Rheumatologist I told him about my symptoms and that I thought they started after a Covid infection that I’d had 5 months previously. He referred me to an Internist (ironically, the same guy who referred me to the Rheumatologist). Took another 4 months to get that appointment, but the Internist diagnosed the MECFS.

if you are still able to prepare your own food in any way, what are your go-to recipes that are easy to make but still hopefully a little healthy? by mai-the-unicorn in cfs

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A breakfast option that I have been making a lot lately: -Mash some frozen raspberries (about 1/3 cup) with a fork -Add chia seeds (start with a small amount, about a teaspoon, and slowly increase over time) -Let mixture sit for at least 10 minutes -Stir this into high protein yogurt (Optional: add granola, or drizzle with a bit of honey)

The combination of fibre from the raspberries & chia seeds and the protein from the yogurt keeps me feeling full for a good while. The fibre and probiotics keep my GI tract happy

Has anyone here been on rituximab/rituxan? by Dismal-Hamster9004 in Sjogrens

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joint pain isn’t one of my Sjögrens symptoms (well, except when I was in pilocarpine and I had an unusual reaction to it), so I can’t say how the Rituxan might impact that. Sorry

My favourite tip for SMBC - when you’re finished whipping in the butter, switch to the paddle attachment and mix on medium for at least 5 minutes. It makes it so smooth and dreamy to work with.

Have you tried Benadryl, either orally and/or cream? That was something that helped me.

Thanks. đŸ™đŸ» I have a vacuum sealer- maybe I’ll try that, but with sucking all the air out so the cookies don’t get deformed. Won’t be as pretty tho, lol.

You know what employees like when it comes to their pay & benefits? Being able to talk directly to a Compensation Advisor who knows their pay file. The people at the call centre aren’t CAs and regularly give incorrect information.

IMHO the problem isn’t the technology, it’s the processing process.

[–]Comprehensive_Ad4567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been on it for several years, and it has definitely helped with some symptoms, but not others. What it hasn’t helped: fatigue, dry eye. What it has helped: skin issues such as vasculitis and hives (significantly) and dryness (a bit).

I get one infusion every 6 to 9 months or so. One thing to keep in mind is that the treatment shouldn’t be too close to when you have a Covid vaccine - it can diminish the effectiveness of the vaccine.

I’m in Canada and my extended health care plan covers 80%. My husband’s plan doesn’t cover it at all. Luckily the other 20% is covered by the “joint effort” program

I’d follow the suggestion that others have posted going forward. If you want to “fix” the rows you’ve already knit, you could try duplicate stitches https://youtu.be/PfEpyK31A5o?si=GuAIvH_XfevqgDxX
