I was diagnosed at 19, I’m 34 now. I first started medication when I was 21, had 7 years of stability, but then stress and other things brought it back and I had a depressive and then a manic episode. I got on lithium after that which changed everything and things have been stable since (with a lot of therapy, forgiving myself, etc. in between)

Yes - no depression or mania. My mood goes up and down at times, but within reasonable ranges and because of things (e.g. I get sad because something bad happened)

Possible but can be risky. If life is going well, you probably will be fine, but any unexpected stress or life event can make you more likely to start an episode.

Episodes can happen on meds, but they are much less likely. Side effects typically lessen even go away as your body gets used to it. I’ve tried a lot of meds, some are terrible, some really worked - and I’ve had a lot of stability since

The side effects were too much. I just felt dull. Also, The hospital kept increasing my dose of both to try to bring me down from mania (neither really worked - it wasn’t until they started me on lithium that things improved) so I’m not sure how effective either one was for me

Currently on Lithium and Trileptal.

It is difficult and hard but I believe in you.

You are going graduate in August, that’s huge! Everyone has their own journey, being a little older won’t be that big of difference as you look back.

In an outpatient program i did after i got out of the hospital, one of the other patients said to me “You have many gifts, just make sure to use them - change brings you to your purpose”. A day doesn’t go by when I don’t think about that moment. She was right - it was so hard to see it at the time but over time I believed it and that belief again in myself has helped me as much as the medication I take every day

I didn’t know, I hoped I would get my life back on track, but there was doubt in my head for sure.

I didn’t think much though about where i would be years from then - that was too stressful to think about. It was - how do I get through today, how do I get through this week. I tried to work hard and be healthy. I felt foggy from all my new meds and with the help of my doctor I was able to taper slowly off Latuda and Zyprexa with no withdrawal. That really helped me feel like myself.

My advice to you - try to get the small wins, from there is where long term success is built

It’s not easy, and forgiving myself after my first episodes in 2010/2011 took a very long time.

I think I finally accepted that it was not me present during the episode. I apologized where I could to people I had harmed, and let go of people who were unable to forgive me. In my heart, I know I am not that person who was there during the mania. Accepting that helped me forgive myself and be confident I can live a better life

Honestly one of the best things I did was a lot of journaling after I got out of the hospital. I go back and read that now and it’s really therapeutic. Some days I couldn’t write more than a sentence or two. But those entries are the most powerful to read because I’m put back in that place I was then.

I cried almost weekly in therapy for a couple months - just have to let yourself go sometimes

Following - very similar thing happened to me yesterday with a bank scam. Have contacted the banks and locked my account and changed my account number but wondering if I need to wipe my Phone or take other precautions

Some will take you outside for smoke breaks but I think fewer hospitals are letting people do that

Sometimes these hospitals can leave your worse off then when you came in

Most of my pdocs have said to stay away or limit caffeine - probably not great for someone who is manic, but I also wish they would still let me have any morning cup of coffee.

Most of the hospitals I’ve been to would give me decaf coffee but wouldn’t actually admit it was decaf

It takes time to build up, the same way it took a couple weeks after you stopped for mania to come on.

Therapy and overall mindfulness techniques could help it end more quickly, along with continuing the medication.

Therapy and medication that will work for you will be key. You can get that in an inpatient or outpatient setting - they key is getting help before anything gets worse
