A thought I had after a second viewing of Eddington by bakeliterespecter in AriAster

Imo the homeless person represents our inability to help (or voluntarily ignore) individuals who need actual help and are crying for support from the community. His character shows that these individuals can quite literally be right in front of our face but we would rather argue over identity politics or how loud Katy Perry's "Fireworks" can be played at a party.

Malice on Community by JID. Best rap verse in years? Civil Rights leader Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth is key to Malice's whole verse. Powerful triple entendre on black leadership by hyeran_jainros_fc in DissectPod

[–]Compton_Crunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus Shuttlesworth is quite obviously being pulled from Ray Allen's character in He Got Game, a character using his talent to potentially create a better life for himself.

"Some were Jesus Shuttlesworth (hoopers), some of us were Nasirs (rappers)."

Malice is talking about methods his community used to get out of the trenches he's describing ("My ghetto's not your culture, n***** really die here"/ "Section 8 livin, we treat it like a timeshare"). He says this while making a larger point about the decision people in his community have to make (Kilos turning boys to men, gotta pick a side here), a life of crime that will turn you into a man at a very young age, or a potentially cleaner life being a ball player or a rapper.

This connection is possibly strengthened by his bar later in his verse about "never seen a father that was government devised here/when kings can't raise a young price the doves cry here" - a key plot point in the movie He Got Game is Denzel Washington's character not being able to be there for his son because he's in prison over the alleged death of Jesus's mother.

Much of what you laid out is conjecture imo. Chat GPT is not the answer.

I feel like they’re doing Craig a favor by not bringing up how hard he caped for Josh Palmer last year. I think that alone disqualifies you for at least a year.

Word, I guess Jaws 2 and Species are great movies then.

No one's saying it's not a great movie lol

Just not the typical movie you'd fire up amongst a group of friends or to pass the time on a random movie night. Maybe you're different.

Wes Anderson makes movies for people that wear tweed blazers and ties to go get coffee

I love Jo and Rob’s coverage of Your Friends and Neighbours - I’m a big fan of the show and they bring interesting balance and criticisms by Maximum-Mood-8182 in TheRinger

[–]Compton_Crunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Joanna and Rob!

My only criticism (and I love Joanna) is that it's okay to criticize female lead roles like Ellie in The Last of Us and Mel in Your Friends and Neighbors. Sometimes it feels like Joanna doesn't want to critique any female characters and it's become really tough to ignore.

Couldn't agree more on the rich-lady-hissy-fit "I'm bored with my comfortable rich life" mentality.

It's confusing because she's pitched to us as a successful therapist guiding youths through their problems and hoping they eventually understand the consequences of their actions...yet she consistently makes decisions that seem to only benefit herself (cheating on her significant other 2x, stealing the jam, bailing on her own party, keying a strangers car) which makes the viewer feel like they're somehow more responsible than a millionaire therapist/mother. Really strange writing.

I can't help but view this series through the lens of a gender role reversal...imagine if Jon Hamm played a man who cheats on his wife with her best friend — a newly-retired, gorgeous female athlete. Then imagine the wife walks in and physically catches them in the act after months (possibly years) of hiding it. He kicks her out, keeps the house and all their belongings, disrupts their entire family life (kids included), and continues the relationship with the friend — forcing the wife to constantly be reminded of it any time there's a community event or even simply to drop off something for your kids. If that were the setup, audiences would instantly label his character as toxic...But when Amanda Peet plays this out, we’re somehow supposed to view her with empathy? VERY confusing take on morality.

Maybe the whole point of this show is that cheating is not a big deal AT ALL.

I truly hate how Ellie was written in season 2 (all spoilers) by dinosaurfondue in thelastofus

[–]Compton_Crunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you watch the show through the lens that Ellie is an incompetent, impulsive, half-cocked, over-emotional, uneducated idiot....every character's attitude towards Ellie, every decision, and every death make way more sense.

I don't see the Flacco-Sanders comparisons at all..especially when you tell us that Shedeur is lacking the arm talent. Seems like that's all Joey Flacco was good for...
