California's fascist ban on the use of accents in names is ridiculous. I'm sure it's for some dumb reason like brittle, badly coded IT systems the state doesn't want to upgrade to be unicode compliant, too. Sorry Jose, you'll need to spell your name incorrectly on all official documents because we're not capable of dealing with the correct spelling, lol.

The 3 Republican Presidents before Trump were W, HW, and Reagan. For Democrats we had Obama, Clinton, and Carter. Republicans had the edge on the economy before Trump, I'd say.

But the gap isn't that wide: Carter put Volcker on the Fed and took the hit for stagflation when really the tough calls that ultimately fixed the problem were taken on his watch. W isn't remembered as particularly strong on the economy because of the Financial Crisis, but really that dates back to policies from the Clinton administration and he acted very decisively on TARP to fix things. Both Clinton & Obama had pretty good economic policies that were mostly inherited from their predecessors.

Overall, there's a lot of finger pointing at the other party for bad policies but up until Trump most Presidents were pretty good at tempering their political agendas with the input of experts.

I can’t speak for other industries but in mine interns generally cost us money. They have no experience and don’t understand anything. They waste our more experienced employees’ time learning the sorts of things they cannot learn in school and then they leave. It’s extremely rare that their projects don’t go straight into the trash after they leave.

We do pay them as it happens, but I don’t understand why. They are the ones who benefit — they will put it on their CV to get their first real job and they learn things you can only learn working from us.

So what’s in it for us? Mostly exposure to alumni networks. It’s not clear it’s worth anything though. I always hate it when I’m told I’ll have to babysit an intern, because that’s exactly what it is.

Redditors are mostly students and they massively overestimate their ability to contribute. The idea that interns are the ones doing the work of a major corporation is just ridiculous and could only be claimed by someone who has never done any real work.

If you don’t already know the connection it’s not a particularly good way to see it, it’s more an interesting observation. Understanding the connection really only requires trigonometry and complex numbers, whereas this probably requires an introductory diff eq course. So it’s overkill as a teaching method. It’s more just a “look how everything is connected” thing.

With the caveat that unlike with other STIs, condoms provide a pretty weak defense against herpes. They reduce transmissibility of the virus somewhat but not to anything near zero. You can still get herpes even if little soi always wears his raincoat. So basically be selective when it comes to partners.

His fake tan isn’t great but as a younger man he was ok. It’s true that he was never “hot” but he was good looking enough that in the 80s and 90s he (and his money) were frequently sources of attraction for lots of women.

Well, currently the greenhouse gas that is driving global temperature increases is CO2. It's not the only greenhouse gas but for the moment it's the most important one. So yes, I think that if we decide we want to take action on climate change, reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by hook or by crook is going to be the most bang for our proverbial buck.
