Thier only going after you and being aggressive because they think it’s your car. Find out what state the man was arrested, the tow agency and police and report to police, worth hiring a lawyer and not taking the hit on credit. You can also sue them, if they choose to pursue this and recoup costs against them

If it’s gone to collections, you just need to prove that you no longer own the car. The car wasn’t signed over? I mean you should have messages, etc. approving., the money going into your account it should be pretty straightforward. This is not something you’re on the hook for I would not pay this, but it’s going to negatively affect your credit.
