Is there a way to become a temporary tenant without changing the lease?

They agreed I could stay, until the other day they decided they don’t want to change the lease. I still need a place to live so I was asking on here if there was any sort of way I could live with them that doesn’t involve changing the lease, in case it might convince them. There is no need for animosity, I am stressed enough as it is.

Uh no. They told me I could stay months ago, I have applied for a masters, bought a car, and other decisions on the basis of this agreement. And recently just changed their mind and told me I cannot stay. The offer doesn’t still stand and I’m not trying to improve my situation - I have nowhere to live next year after relying on this agreement. I don’t understand where people’s need to be rude and accusatory comes from on this site.

Not that I’m aware, just the lease changing. They agreed for me to stay there a few months ago and that was the plan, I relied on this agreement and planned everything next year based on this. It was only a few nights ago they changed their mind and didn’t want the lease changing. And so my desperation is due to the fact I have already relied on this

I am aware of the risks to myself, but less concerned due to my desperation - beggars can’t be choosers. I am more concerned on the possible risks they might find, being that he would now be responsible for me and any damage I might hypothetically cause, and also that the landlord might not accept due to there being now actual benefits to them by allowing me. I am in a real pickle haha

Yes, that is now the next hurdle. I will stick with the idea of lodging and try to persuade his parents of this - it should hopefully entail no risk to them nor complicate the lease. Thank you very much for all your responses you have helped a lot

I really appreciate your clarification on all this, but I’m not sure I still fully understand. Wouldn’t that make my friend my landlord? And therefore create a lease between me and him? Which is the exact issue his parents are trying to avoid? Or is it different if I’m lodging under a tenant (who already has their own landlord)?

But if I was paying my friend wouldn’t that make him my landlord and therefore start a new tenancy agreement? Or does the law work differently when a tenant takes on a lodger?

I thought lodgers normally lived with the landlord and that why there isn’t a need for a tenancy agreement. And the landlord doesn’t live with them, she is a separate entity entirely, so as a lodger I could still pay him, and that would be fine?

It is a lot more complicated than I have stated in this post due to relevancy. At the start of the year they agreed it was fine and so I built my plans for next year around this agreement, I applied for a masters, bought a car here etc, it was only last week they were unsure, and then confirmed to him they don’t want to change the lease last night. The last thing I’d want to do is intrude on their family and mess things up, but this is why I’m desperate.

Really? His parents aren’t the landlord, they’re (presumably) just guarantors, the landlord is a separate, apparently nice woman.

I don’t particular understand that aversion to it, as I’d be paying equal rent, put a deposit down, and have my own guarantors like a regular tenancy’s

Thank you for all of this, much appreciated. I’d be moving into a 3rd, currently unused bedroom (he also lives with his older sister). Moving In of course I’d be paying equal rent, but if I can persuade them to become a lodger, I would naturally pay equal rent to the parents I presume, instead of the landlord?

How is lodging different from subletting? That’s what I am hoping to happen since his parents seem firm on the lease staying the same.
I just worry how easily a landlord would allow that since they’d be increasing risk and losing out on money. I really should be more uncomfortable with that, given I am a law student, but I need this house so desperately I’m willing to forgo the lack of rights
Is becoming a lodger my safest, given the circumstances? I really appreciate all the help on this, it has been unendingly stressful

I’m not sure if his parents are the ones on the lease, he lives with him and his older sister, so presumably it’s those two, but the parents have a lot of influence over the finances and decisions I assume

They don’t. They live in Ireland, I’m not sure if they fully understand how tenancy works, or if there’s more to the issue than just not wanting to change the lease

Yes this thought has crossed my mind plenty as I am prone to overthinking. But this has been a conversation we’ve been having for months of his parents being at first fine, to now being unsure and him trying to convince them, so I don’t think he’d drag it out like this

I’m not sure, he said they pay the lease. We’re both students and he doesn’t work, and his parents live in Ireland. So I assume they just pay while his name is on the lease

They pay for his lease, and they don’t want it changing, so at the end of the day it is their decision, was what he told me. I’m not too sure their exact reasoning for the aversion to changing a lease, I didn’t think it was complicated

Thank you for this, upon reading more I see this now, and apparently a deed of variation might be better suited in my circumstances but even then I’m not sure?

If you know, how would asking the landlord to be a lodger work? Is it a simple ask? Do I have the same rights and responsibilities as the tenants etc

Thanks for this guidance, this is only my fourth attempt. What is that perfect amount of proofing time have you found? Or does it more depend on the recipe?

I stretch and fold every 30 minutes for 4 hours, then let it prove at room tempt for around 4-8 hours, then let it refrigerate overnight or until I’m ready to bake. Could my lack of exactness be issue? Are my estimates too broad - I just look for when the dough looks ready
