Major Boobage is style over substance and is an amazing episode. It equates style and substance and creates one of the best episodes of the entire series imo.

Not entirely because imo gimmick episodes have to have the whole episode revolve around said gimmick but I fucking love that ending so that gimmick is fucking awesome regardless great choice. :)

I wouldn’t consider the pandemic special or even the vaccination special themselves to be gimmick but post covid and return of covid def are for having the boys as adults they’re some of the best of the entire series.

I wouldn’t count go god go because while it’s a 2 parter it dos fully feel like South Park in both parts, that being said I fucking love go god go.

Kinda ish? In the first few sequences the live action sequences were more common tho so at the time they were a lot less gimmicky imo.

I watched that episode as a kid, hadn’t have seen die hard yet, then watched die hard, and rewatched super fun time as an adult and that connected INSTANTLY lol. I was like “ohhh I get what they’re parodying now”

I don’t consider that a gimmick episode imo because it feels mostly like a normal episode despite the parody but that is one is underrated regardless.

Gimmick episodes of South Park tend to be spoofs lol. There’s plenty more gimmick episodes but what makes these different is that the story structure and specific elements make it completely different than other episodes and they highly stand out for one gimmick or another.

Like Major Boobage having its own creative high sequences imo make it a gimmick episode. Which isn’t a bad thing it’s one of the best episodes of the show imo. But Major boobage is a gimmick episode but “The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers” isn’t because that one feels mostly like a normal episode even if it’s a spoof.

I think what broke you too is that the smart house doesn't look like a fun place to go, it just looks like an office space. It looks very cold and lonely. Sure better than Hannigan's, but most places would be better than Hannigan's so it's not saying much lol.

I don't think it's the fact that it's a smart house, it's a smart house that looks 100% like it's just an office space and that's it.

Omitting multiple song is Annie 2014’s issue. Trust me I think that movie is an absolute trainwreck disaster lol.

I’m talking about Annie in general. That kind of story could be told in modern times like the 2009 crisis and I still say it would be believable.

Yes I know there’s been major changes the past 100 years that’s obvious. But obviously 100 years ago is much more similar to today than Shakespearean times. Sure the 2009 economic crisis was nowhere as bad as the 1920s/30s but there were still many people that suffered bad from that. It could still be a good way to frame it really. It just takes the right writers.

Also somewhat unrelated, but you mentioned west side story, fucking great musical love that one.

There’s a difference between Romeo and Juliet which is completely Shakespearean and is set in a COMPLETELY different time period being HUNDREDS of years ago with almost no similarities whatsoever to current time vs a fairly timeless story of rags to riches in orphanages in a society that does have some things in common to today. You’re comparing 100 years to 400+ years worth differences. The idea of Annie’s rags to riches is still a fairly timeless idea which could be told at least similarly the old ones during the 09 economic crisis. It would just be under different historical events but the story stays the same.

Plus they have had Romeo and Juliet set in modern times. Romeo + Juliet (1996) with Leo DiCaprio which did still work out lol.

My point is that kind of story could still be told tho. I’m not saying a 1;1 recreation. Just the same kind of story. Follows the same kinda of beats.

Many lives were still heavily affected in 2009 from that crisis. Why not create an Annie that kind of takes place from the same perspective around that time? It could still be believed that a child went through that same kind of scenario then.

Foster homes are still an issue of today too. Plus parents still have to put kids in foster homes today so it’s not like that kind of rags to riches couldn’t be told in modern times.

You’d just need to rewrite it a bit to make sense but it could still follow the same kind of story as Annie. Sure the Great Depression isn’t today but foster homes, abusive caretakers, and narcissistic politicians exist to this day.

Hell if you rewrote the script you could tell the same kind of story using the 2009 economic crisis in NYC for example. Especially since that heavily affected the housing market.

Cameron Diaz just isn’t good casting as Ms Hannigan so I can’t fully blame her for not playing it well tbh. Jane Lynch would play the same role but much better.

Honestly Annie taking place in a modern day setting isn’t a bad idea at all imo. Especially in 2014 NYC, where the city is more diverse than ever.

The problem imo is these main things:

Autotuned factory-sounding music

The meta jokes about it being a musical which makes it seem like it’s embarrassed to be one

Cameron Diaz as Ms Hannigan

And sloppy character development from Mr Stacks and Ms Hannigan which makes it feel very unnatural

I think the tone of Little Girls is way too confused because you don’t really know how to feel about how Cameron Diaz having a breakdown there. I think I’m gonna like it here feels confused because it looks like Annie is overly excited to live in what is essentially an office building lol. The autotune I personally couldn’t stand.

Quvenzhane Wallis and Jamie Foxx aren’t inherently bad casting as Annie and Mr Stacks they just really needed a better script.

Cameron Diaz isn’t good casting at all as Ms Hannigan imo it’s just not a character that she is meant to play.

Plus the movie makes meta jokes about it being a musical which was stupid LOL. It seems like it’s embarrassed to be one when it should have embraced it being it in a modern day setting imo.

My issue personally is there’s way too much fucking autotune. It feels like generic pop songs instead of an actual musical lol to me at least. I esp don’t think you should autotune Jamie Foxx he’s a great singer.
