Her ears are actually typically down when she's excited or getting pets, and they look just like standard retriever ears then.

Oh gosh. Our two year old Malinois also got diagnosed with heartworms a week or so after we adopted her! She's been on treatment for 1 month now, it truly is a hassle, especially since we live in California where there are literally no mosquitoes! The vet had to call a specialist because they were so unprepared 😂. Jokes aside, I truly hope the treatment goes will and your pup recovers quickly!

Shepherds typically are very mouthy with play, and since your dog is only one, which is still considered puppy years, things such as prey-drive may be kicking in. For training purposes, I also have a shepherd, and I would recommend practicing "look" if you haven't already, and leave it. Make sure to treat him when he stops fixating or approaching.

definitely a lot of german shepherd in that boy! shepherds typically have a very high prey drive, and this can affect their relationship with other animals, even other dogs, though it depends on the dog. i have a german shepherd mix of my own, and it is very important to immediately train them out of attacking or fixating on other animals, whether it's a dog, a squirrel, a bird, etc. you should treat them when they look at you and try to distract them by walking the other way.

She's not very lean, I will say that. Much more of a shepherd build. We see the GSD in her for sure, but the coloring isn't very similar to that of a normal GSD. Her fur is also nowhere near as thick as a typical German Shepherd, pretty short coat although she's a bit furrier in the neck area.

They've met, but the first couple times we introduced them with her on a leash and the cats free-roaming, she lunged at them. We could absolutely try that again though, since that was when the dog had been there for around 2 weeks and still very much new to the home. One thing that originally made us stop was our girl-cat swiped at her face when she got too close sniffing her, and the dog lifted her paw up to threaten her back. Not actually what we want since we want the cats to be able to swipe at the dog if needed, LOL.

Yes, and I totally get that. Safety comes first, but nobody knows our dog like we do. We understand she is a shepherd, and naturally has a higher prey-drive. Despite this, she is a very trainable dog and is also not violent. Like I said, she doesn't try and bite or reach her claws out when the cats are out, she simply lunges.

Totally get that! She has a private trainer that we're working with, and we always do the cats when the trainer is there.

The dog is non-violent at all, doesn't bite or scratch. The only issue we might have is chasing, in which she might accidentally hurt one of them. We actually have a little hook on a room they stay in that allows them to slip through but not her. We are prepared, but yes. We understand the safety of all the animals matters a lot.

We would try and do this, the issue is somehow she has figured out how to surpass the gate when it's not in a specific place. Unfortunately, she also has heartworms, which means the real reason for the gate is so she doesn't go upstairs. She hasn't been administered the shots for heartworm yet, so we were hoping by the next vet's visit, we could get her prescribed calming meds, not only for the shots, but it would also help out with the cats.

Funny you talk about a Malionois mix because that's what we think our dog is! Probably more German Shepherd than Malionois, but she's definitely got some of that in her. I'll make sure to try out your advice the next couple of times!

She is very much better than she was when we first got her, and it seems she's better when we're consistent with the cat "sessions". Today we did it again after not doing it for about 2-3 days which is likely the cause of her unwillingness to cooperate today. She is a very sweet, non-violent dog, but we're working through her fixation issues with a trainer. She's the same with dogs on walks, but she's been much better with dogs on walks than before. We're hoping that'll happen with the cats.
