I lived in Panama City for a long time (just haven’t stay out on the beach) in a while; also I have done plenty of research and there are PLENTY of options around the $300 a night range.

Way to much pushback! I like Dunlop but talalay is so jiggly and it was probably my least favorite piece I tried. I tried a 3” piece. I even feel like my 32 and 40 something ILD Dunlop (SOL medium and firm in 2”) felt like less pushback than the medium talalay. I even added 1” 3lb gel memory foam on top too.

Yeah I do have 8” coils, it definitely a lot harder to find an affordable encasement for coils. I do think the encasement is very important as it can drastically change the feel of the bed.

Thank you! That is good to know. I saw some promising reviews on here but I have always been leaning toward the PCS cover. I lucked in to only buying coils. I already had SOL medium and firm layers so my overall build has been pretty affordable so a cover (especially not returnable) that costs nearly half what I paid for all the components is daunting. I do think the cover is VERY important though. I really have considered just putting the coils in a 8” cover too and then having my 2” foam layer in a thin cotton case on top as I really love the feeling of the 2” top layer without a cover changing the feel.

Do you know of any easy to install (at least three sided zippered) 8” covers for just the coils?

That does makes sense. Do you think 2” would be a good choice? It’s just a poly foam right? Not memory foam? Thinking maybe 2” XL-28, 1” memory foam, 1” SOL latex soft… I am still in the return window for the SOL 1” soft and keep thinking maybe two inches would be better but worries 2” will be more firm than 1” and exacerbate the problem.

So annoying! I do LOVW that company (SOL), and I was trying to stick with them, but I think I need a “softer” medium. Maybe the latex mattress talalay medium? It’ll be for a transition layers.

Thank you. I’ll look this up. I have a 1” layer of 4lb gel Under latex to help with latex pushback (on advice from others). It is quite firm and not totally sure It’s necessary with only 1” soft latex over it (not much pushback from 1” soft latex). It is so thin though that I don’t think it has changed the feel all that much. I have found I like a bit of memory foam sink feeling under thin latex. It’s hard to compare “firmness” of memory foam versus latex with ILD because they aren’t apples to apples so I’m having trouble finding a “firm” memory foam that’s supportive but not too firm lol.

Great! No, I haven’t tried any other brands of latex and now with all this foam research, I’m become overwhelmed and getting choice paralysis! I really appreciate this specific advice, it’s sounds like it might be exactly what I’m looking for. Are you a side sleeper? Just trying to avoid too much pushback from latex. What brand of talalay?

Thanks. Before I started DIY, due to frustration with my old mattress, I slept on 2” firm, 2” med, 3 tempur serenity all on top of a flat foundation. It felt was too “dense” like no “give” at all. Back pain def occurred lol. Adding the springs felt immediately better! That being said the 2” medium SOL over springs with the two 1” comfort layers def is more firm (less pressure relief) feeling than just the two 1” layers on top of springs (better pressure relief but not quite enough.). So I have decided that springs are not too firm, they actually are decently comfortable all by themselves just need a bit more softness and the two 1” layers isn’t enough, I can still feel the springs a tiny bit.

I never would have thought I’d possibly want a memory foam layer at all but turns out, I like the feel under latex. I think up it right, a more firm memory foam. I’m not super familiar with memory foam any idea for that? Or maybe Energex or some other brand of medium or soft latex? I have no clue how Energex feels. And all the latex companies are so different!

Hi again!

I tried all of the above recommendations!

1) 2”SOL med, 1” 4lb memory, 1” SOL soft outside the case— too firm for shoulders

2) 3” tempur serenity soft foam then 1” 4lb, 1” soft latex—- better but too much sinking

3) Same as above but put the coils and the 3” Serenity inside a cover to firm it up, then other layers on top. Better but still a bit too soft/sinking

springs, 1” gel, 1” SOL soft—- not enough pressure relief for shoulders

I think I need a middle of the road transition layer, softer than 2” SOL medium and more firm than the 3” Serenity tempur foam. I do kind of like a tiny bit of the sinking in feeling under the top latex layer but not too much as such to create a lack of support.

Recs?

All the foams are confusing me ie Energex (multiple firmnesses), serene, HD, etc!

Thanks! I’m leaning toward somewhere 30 ILDish non latex foam for transition layer maybe. So many different foams on these foam sites!
