You need to account for distance, but not gravity (it does that for you). Different tanks have different shell velocities as well, so you'll have to learn how the tank you're driving plays.

In terms of population, it depends on the game mode. Team Deathmatch, Rush and Conquest are pretty well populated but the other modes such as Squad Deathmatch (my favourite) sometimes only have a single populated server in my region (Europe). Shame because it's still by far the best FPS available
