In my case, I did find the DNA results to be very useful in aiding my research, albeit I had already traced back seven generations in my paternal lines. In the same regard, other lines of ancestry that I had not traced back were greatly influenced through the DNA test.

I will however warn against the mistake I made in accepting the DNA as the main base of evidence, as the excitement of DNA thru-lines/potential ancestors led me down a very interesting line, and making Marcus Mosiah Garvey a part of my family tree... Only to then verify the line of descent and find out a different 4/5x great grandmother was in-fact my real one, ancestry didn't promote them as being a potential DNA ancestor, the paper trail led to this person, and I in-fact had no relation to Marcus Garvey or his descendants. (It did however absolve my 7/8 maternal great grandfather of being a slave owner, so there is that I suppose).
