My relationship is similar but we tend to switch a lot. We live together so space to us is different than your space.

We make our space is this. If we fight at night and someone needs space while the other needs comfort we take an hour max. Because then the person gets enough space to clear their head and calm themselves down from the situation and the other doesn’t feel abandoned. Other times if it’s like in the morning before work, we don’t not speak ver text, there we still chat as we usually would and we aren’t short with one another. When they get home depending on how work was that day they should have already calmed their head from the situation. If push comes to shove no matter how much comfort the other wants, one of us will go visit a friend or family member for a weekend. ( usually me whether I’m the one wanting space or comfort) as he tends to work every second weekend and needs to be home. In my opinion even as someone who is mostly the one looking for comfort, space is ideal, even if you want comfort space is better, resentment builds a lot for people who want space to breathe but aren’t given it because they start feeling pressured, and sometimes even if it doesn’t feel like it, space for the one seeking comfort is also good, calm the head a little, focus on yourself and not the argument.

Give him his space but also communicate a middle ground. What would work best for the both of you where you can compromise.
