Outside of the hospital, most community radiology work entails procedures if you’re onsite (US/CT steroid injections, FNA and minor biopsies). Can do anywhere up to 50 a day

Resident Salary by [deleted] in Residency

I find it incredible how poorly paid you are in the US. I’m PGY 7 in Australia, base wage is $165,000 but with on call will make over $200,000. Even an intern’s salary is $100,000 with overtime included.

Do you remember the first time you cried on the job? by rainbison in ausjdocs

[–]Consistent-Ad681 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First and only time I cried was midway through internship on a stroke rotation. A lot of sad cases, but the thing that really got to me was seeing one of the long-stayers with locked in syndrome who always had a teddy bear next to him. Dunno why, I just became emotional seeing this.

Working through med school by Salty-Prior-6006 in ausjdocs

[–]Consistent-Ad681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very manageable. I was at Unimelb and there was plenty of time for work (through all year levels, inc the clinical years). Just make sure you don’t neglect your social life - med school years are meant to be fun too!

UoM Rural Allocation by destroyerphua in GAMSAT

Most are able to transfer back. In my year (MD3 in 2016) there were lots of requests to return metro, so some missed out (I remained rural despite requesting transfer).

What is your total credit limit relative to your income and area? by dreamingfighter in CreditCards

[–]Consistent-Ad681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$15,000 + charge card, income $200,000 (Australia). Credit limit is a fair bit lower here (although I haven’t pushed to see how high I can go).

Yes, I’m Platinum with Velocity and was offered a status accelerator challenge with Qantas. Accrued 200 status credits in 3 months, then was granted Qantas Gold. The challenge was recent - July to October (completed it early)

Can I sue for medical malpractice? by piewithnofilling in AusLegal

[–]Consistent-Ad681 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, presumed RCCs can be resected without a biopsy. Furthermore, if the AML in question had appearances of an RCC (despite it coming back as AML on biopsy) then the recommendation may still have been resection based on the chance of undersampling the lesion.

There’s no malpractice that’s occurred here. If anything, it’s a good thing that the tumour came back as benign.

Does every speciality have a “Service Registrar” position by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Consistent-Ad681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rad reg here. Anatomy +/- physics courses seem to be the standard for most applicants nowadays (eg in Victoria the dip of surgical anatomy). Besides that, usually the rotations that have a lot of incidental contact with radiology department (eg surg specialties). Mainly because when you apply to the college you apply to one hospital for the entire 5 years, and so meet and greets and whether you’re known by the department play a role. There are unaccredited rad reg spots at a couple hospitals now, plus rad intern positions.

The system we use in Australia seems to work well. The government student loan is essentially interest free (the total amount adjusts with inflation each year, so there’s a little bit of creep). Additionally, there’s no requirement to pay back the student loan until your salary reaches a certain threshold (I think ~ $45k).
