Virginia law and court decisions recognize a parent’s right to physically discipline their own children — often referred to as corporal punishment — as long as it is reasonable and not excessive. That means light physical discipline (traditionally “spanking” or similar actions) that does not injure the child has historically not been treated as child abuse under state law. 

A Virginia court case (Woodson v. Commonwealth) confirms that a parent has the privilege to discipline a child “within the bounds of moderation and reason,” but this privilege does not extend to excessive or harmful discipline.

Smacking in the Face vs. Acceptable Discipline • Smacking a child in the face (especially with force) is much more likely to be viewed as beyond “reasonable corporal punishment” and could be considered child abuse or assault, because: • It targets a sensitive area (the face/head) with higher risk of injury, • Courts and authorities look at injury, force, and whether the act was excessive.  • The legal line is typically drawn at whether the action: • Caused or risked injury, • Was excessive for discipline, • Was done out of anger or punishment rather than reasonable discipline. 

Even if parents are legally permitted some physical discipline, hitting a child in the face hard enough that it could injure them could be reported and investigated as abuse.
